Don't want to return your Peloton treadmill? there are other solutions

If you love your Peloton treadmill and don't want to return it after its recall, you're in luck: The company has introduced several other options to make it more secure, including a software update that locks the belt if the treadmill isn't used for a while. moment.

Earlier this month, Peloton issued voluntary recalls for all Peloton Tread and Tread Plus machines, following reports of injuries and an accident in which a young child was dragged under a Tread Plus and killed.

Owners of any of the treadmills have been asked to stop using them immediately and have been offered the option of returning them to Peloton for a refund (which you can do until November 6, 2022). However, if you prefer to keep your machine, there are a few other options.

The main problem with the Tread is its touch screen, which could come off and fall off. Peloton offered to send an engineer to the owners to fix the problem for free if they preferred not to return everything.

Peloton hasn't started shipping engineers yet, but you can sign up - opens in a new tab with the email address you used when you ordered the treadmill and your order number, and the company will contact you once they're ready. to start making the repairs. .

The problem with the Tread Plus (which was only sold in the US) is its cleated belt, which can drag children, pets, and objects under it. Again, Peloton is developing a mechanical fix, although we don't know the details yet. It may be some sort of barrier covering the belt at the rear of the machine, preventing anything from getting caught as it spins.

The company also offers to move treadmills to a safer room in your home, away from pets and children. Although they have wheels, the Peloton Tread weighs 290 lbs (131 kg) and the Tread Plus weighs 455 lbs (206 kg), so it would be unwise to move them on their own.

Update your firmware

The new software update applies to the Tread Plus and automatically locks the machine when it sleeps or is "idle" for 45 seconds.

This means you are not in a class, the belt is not moving, the screen has not been touched, and the incline has not been adjusted. It will also lock out if a class is in progress, but the treadmill detects that no one is running. To unlock it again, you'll need to enter a PIN on the touchscreen.

We reached out to Peloton to find out if the update will need to be downloaded and installed manually (and if so, how), or if it will be downloaded automatically when the treadmill is online.
