Vodafone launches "half-formatted" SIM cards to combat plastic

As part of measures to eliminate all non-essential plastics in its retail stores and offices by April 2020, Vodafone is required to issue customers with medium-sized SIM card holders. SIM card holders have traditionally been about the size of a credit card, often exceeding the dimensions of the actual SIM card. By reducing the size of the carrier, Vodafone will reduce plastic waste by more than 340 tonnes and save up to 15 tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted during production and transport for every tonne of plastic reduced. This equates to a reduction of 5.000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

The initiative will support Vodafone's overall goal of halving its environmental impact by 2025. The operator's 7.700 stores around the world will no longer offer plastic bags and limit the use of plastic advertising or promotional material. A range of eco-friendly accessories, including phone cases, backs and charging docks, will also be stocked under the "Red loves Green" brand. Vodafone will help customers recycle and extend the life of their devices and will no longer offer plastic bags in its 7.700 stores around the world. The stores will also limit the use of plastic marketing and promotional materials and offer a range of 'Red loves Green' eco-friendly accessories. This includes phone cases, charging banks, and docks made from durable materials. We are committed to using fully renewable energy, while plastic consumables such as pens, shirts, straws and cutlery will be replaced with reusable and recyclable alternatives wherever possible in Vodafone office buildings. "Halving our impact on the environment means not only solving material problems like our carbon footprint and our e-waste, but also taking action in other areas where we have an impact, like the non-essential or disposable plastics we use in our retail stores and Joakim Reiter, Vodafone's director of external affairs."With many initiatives launched in Vodafone's markets, we want a consistent approach wherever we operate. It starts with rolling out small SIM cards, tackling unnecessary plastics in our offices, and providing our customers with eco-friendly accessories. "
