Ubisoft's new tech may mean never downloading a patch ever again

Ubisoft has created something that may mean online gaming will never have downtime again. Now create the game development tool of the future. Since no, today. But the Stockholm studio is working on a game using its new Ubisoft Scalar technology that sounds amazing.

Unveiled at GDC XNUMX, Ubisoft Scalar is clearly not a game engine, it's a production tool that opens up a planet of possibilities for cloud and online gaming. As you can see from the trailer below, this removes the traditional hardware barrier from the game developer's side of the equation. This means good news for players!

As described in the presentation, Ubisoft Scalar expands the scope of the type of games that developers can create. The tool removes limitations and has many benefits for authors and gamers.

From a player's perspective, Ubisoft Scalar means that online gaming is always going to be running and free. It won't go offline for hours to incorporate updates. The game can be updated while players are still active in it. As hinted at in the trailer, this may help support more players on a huge shared planet, and create new types of social experiences as a result.

Christian Holmqvist, CTO of Ubisoft Stockholm, Per-Olof Romell, Director of Scalar Products at Ubisoft, and Patrick Bach, General Manager of Ubisoft Stockholm, highlighted how the new "decentralized core technology" will revolutionize gaming as we know it.

On the development side, Scalar accelerates the speed at which games can be developed on the fly. Fundamentally, the different aspects are compartmentalized so that they can be worked on separately, unlike a game engine.

Ubisoft Stockholm is already working on a new game that uses the technology. We don't know what it is, or when it's released, but it could be something on a scale we haven't seen before going through the GDC presentation.

Described as a "once-in-a-lifetime" project, Ubisoft Scalar has established itself as a go-to tool for developing metaverse games. And I'm not talking about those who look like trash like Decentraland. We could finally start to see acceptable, metaverse-ready games that we all want to play.
