These new Nokia phones remind us what "cheap phone" really means

With the cheap phone market dominated by big Chinese names like Redmi, Realme and Pocophone, it can be easy to overlook loyal handset makers, but HMD Global just gave us a reason to pay attention.

HMD Global, which makes Nokia phones, has launched three new super-cheap handsets as part of the annual MWC 2022 technology conference.

These new mobiles are the Nokia C2 2nd Edition (the original was launched in 2020), the Nokia C21 and the Nokia C21 Plus, all of which are part of the company's C range, which is its lowest-end collection, since in compared to the slightly higher range. -extreme G and near midrange X families.

Like we said, these are super affordable phones. The first and last phones will launch in the UK and are priced at €75 (around £100, AU$140) and €100 (around £130, AU$190) respectively.

Here are their specs, so you can see how they compare:

If you're confused by the C21 Plus's battery situation, it seems you can choose between two sizes, just like how many phones give you a choice between RAM and storage.

At a time when every budget phone maker is trying to launch a super flashy, spec-heavy behemoth, it's a bit refreshing to see some real budget phones. Seriously, how many phones do you see these days with just 1GB of RAM or a single rear camera?

Obviously, these devices won't work like your iPhone or Samsung Galaxy device, but they're designed for people who don't need a premium smartphone. They're cheap and cheerful, perhaps for seniors or technophobes who can't stop teching the world.

Alongside the new smartphones, HMD Global introduced a few headphones and earphones, and they're all affordable devices, just like their mobile counterparts.

Nokia phones are coming to the UK from April, but we don't know if they'll be coming to other places, so we'll have to wait and see.

They weren't the only cheap phones we saw at MWC, either. TCL has come up with its own selection with impressive rear cameras and big batteries, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. We expect more to be released all the time, so stay tuned in the coming days for more.
