The most absurd consumer technology in video games

The most absurd consumer technology in video games
While the latest trailer for The Last of Us 2 was shocking with its brutal survival violence, it had one last surprise in store: a character is shown playing the game on a PS Vita. Given how few people play the system these days, and the new game takes place in 2033, we found the amusing implication that one of the few tech items to survive the apocalypse would be Sony's underappreciated handheld console. Which got us thinking: What are the most absurd devices that appear in video games? Of course, many games incorporate technological advances that saturate our own world, such as cell phones. But we've found cases where the inclusion of a specific piece of consumer technology seems, in retrospect, to be really weird. These go beyond product placement to break suspension of disbelief, making us wonder what kind of world we're playing in. These are our favorite times when games and devices don't mix at all. In the Metal Gear Solid series, Solid Snake (and his other aliases) tend to communicate with their superiors using a Codec receiver, an inconspicuous device that directly manipulates the tiny bones of the ear using nanotechnology. . You'd like to think, then, that Snake would have moved on from his big old Sony Walkman cassette player to something a little more...advanced. After all, there are a multitude of reasons why cassettes are now a thing of the past: they're bulky, they have to be rewound manually, and the sound quality isn't exactly of a high level. And yet Solid Snake refuses to leave his old music player behind. Maybe he's just stubborn; maybe it's sentimental; Or maybe Apple Care won't cover devices that enter a war zone.

Nintendo Switch - Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze

The Nintendo Switch is a terrific console, but it's hard to say that its Joy-Con controllers are better suited for small hands when detached from the console. In the end, you can probably imagine a chimpanzee using a Joy-Con without too much trouble. But a monkey dressed in a tie that weighs over 300 pounds? No opportunity. We're assuming Nintendo missed the note though, as Diddy Kong and the DK Ham Fists play together on the Nintendo Switch as part of the in-game idle animation in Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze. Diddy probably also gave him the bottom right Joy-Con, the cheeky little monkey. (And before we get any notes, yes, we know the original version had DK and Diddy on the 3DS. This Nintendo has decided to update it to make the reissue heartwarming.)

Energizer Batteries - Alan Wake

In a world where darkness can only be surpassed by light, batteries suddenly become a precious resource. That being said, only the best will do the trick for Mr. Alan Wake, who uses only Energizer batteries to power his lantern. But here's a question for you... how does Alan Wake always position the batteries the right way every time? Also, how does he succeed in this feat of witchcraft in the dark and under duress? And finally, what kind of torch drains batteries so fast anyway? It seems that some things in life will always be a mystery, but Alan's favorite brand of batteries will never be in doubt. And don't get us started on every Verizon phone in the game...

Robotic Operating Buddy (R.O.B.) - Serie Super Smash Bros.

What do you do when a niche NES device is largely forgotten? Make him a character for Super Smash Bros of course! STEAL. It was a typically new Nintendo idea that no one knew they wanted (and apparently no one asked either). The toy was compatible with some NES games, but was originally designed to make the NES more sophisticated for buyers, who were weary of video games after the infamous 1983 crash STEAL. It was certainly a clever piece of technology, but it's best recognized today as one of the rising players in Super Smash Bros. The plastic robot got its start in the game in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and has been a mainstay ever since. Well done, little friend.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Pokemon Red and Blue

Imagine: you have been waiting all your life for 10 years. Finally you get the summon from the lovely teacher of the town to choose your own pocket beast and start your amazing journey. You come home to say goodbye to your mother (like a good boy) and show up in your room... to play on your Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Imagine being in a zoological wonderland where you can breed, train, and battle Pokémon, but you'd rather sit inside and play Kirby All-Star. It doesn't matter. We all need breaks.

Sims 2

AlienWare Desktop - Sims 2

Many of the elements in The Sims 2 are comedic imitations of real-world products, and this extends to computers, coming from fictional gaming brands like LyfeB Gon and PeachySoft. And then there was the AlienWare office. Whatever the reason for the backdoor partnership, EA has planted one of the best gaming PCs in the world, and its humorous description of ``Everything but the saucer'' even makes fun of the platform's in-game price tag. (3100 simoleons!) And real life. (FYI, some modders have resurrected the item, but only for Sims 3, unfortunately...)

Sony Xperia Z5 - Uncharted 4

Sony, Sony, Sony. As an entertainment and tech titan, it's no surprise that Sony is taking products from a corporate arm and putting them in movies - both Hotel Transylvania 2 and the James Bond movie Skyfall have suggested or verbatim Sony Phones, while Chappie blatantly strikes him as a PS4. . (Yes, product placement!) But it was a bit more stupid when we realized that the Uncharted 4 characters were sporting the Sony Xperia Z5, because even at this point in late 2015, Sony phones were having a hard time competing. It's one thing to put your last phone in the hands of James Bond for a scene; It is another way to pressure your developers to animate your business smartphone for desperate publicity.

Windows Phone y tabletas Surface - Quantum Break

Well, fair is fair: 2016's time-manipulating third-person action game Quantum Break is packed with Microsoft products like Windows phones and Surface tablets, as Kotaku noted. This makes sense given that the game was released by Microsoft Studios... and developed by Remedy Entertainment, who created Alan Wake (above this list). It's funny that Sony and Microsoft have relied on third-party developers to integrate their devices into games.
