The Lightyear trailer takes Buzz to infinity and ... well, watch it and find out

The trailer for Disney and Pixar's next big blockbuster, Lightyear, has arrived. And you can check out the new trailer below. The Lightning will bring us the story of the origin of Buzz Lightyear, a name and a face that any Toy Story lover would recognize. But where Buzz, until now, was a toy based on a fictional (we assume) character in the Toy Story movies, in Lightyear we have a full history of the "Space Ranger" itself. As for when you can see the movie, Lightyear's release date is labeled "Summer 2022" in the trailer, but we actually have a more specific release window. You might want to take a look at the movie poster tweeted out by the film's official Twitter account just before the trailer was released, suggesting that Lightyear's release date will be June 2022, so mark your calendars now. in anticipation of this space adventure.

LaComparacion's first reactions to the Lightyear trailer

We asked the TechRadar team for their initial reactions to the Lightyear trailer, and the answers ranged from positive and excited to confused, and even downright indifferent. John McCann, Global Editor "I'm an absolute fan of the Toy Story movies, so any movie that explores a character in more detail is going to get my attention. That being said, I'm a little confused as to how Buzz fits in here as a real person now? Jess Weatherbed, IT Writer “My inner sci-fi Pixar/dweeb child is really excited, but his face makes me feel deeply uncomfortable and I can't figure out why. Like a weird, weird valley effect. "Also, if we get it, I also demand a western for Woody and Jessie, we have a lot of good sci-fi and a lack of recent westerns." Rhys Wood, Editor-in-Chief “I think this sounds like a nifty Toy Story spin-off that could put the series back in a fresher direction after Toy Story 4 (which I found a bit lackluster). "I also wonder what Tim Allen thinks about being replaced by Chris Evans to play Buzz Lightyear. Evans is obviously much cooler, so personally I'm happy with that casting choice." Adam Vjestica, video game editor "This trailer didn't move me at all. "I don't care about a real astronaut. "I want a toy astronaut." Gerald Lynch, Editor-in-Chief "I really enjoyed this Lightyear trailer. Family sci-fi!" Hamish Hector, editor "I think the trailer looks great, I'm glad it was the sci-fi character instead of a 'real' inspiration for Buzz, which some fans thought it would be at first." Axel Metz, Editor-in-Chief "They should do an origin story for each toy, culminating in a multiverse movie called Toy Story."

Analysis: Could Lightyear Give Pixar a Boost?

Judging by the team's responses, positive or negative, it's fair to say that Lightyear's trailer is getting a lot of buzz (ahem). And rightfully so, because it's arguably the most interesting movie Pixar has worked on since Soul and Coco. Aside from those two great movies, we've seen some very mediocre Pixar movies in recent years, from disappointing sequels to Cars and the Incredibles to largely forgettable releases like Onward and The Good Dinosaur. Pixar could recapture some of the magic that made it so important in the '90s and '2000s, and Lightyear could be just one small step in recapturing that glory. Of course, given Lightyear's setting and context, we're expecting cameos and Easter eggs galore. When we see the film next year, we'll be looking for nods to other Pixar movies and characters, and also wondering where the movie is on the Pixar timeline that fans have been theorizing about ever-increasingly.
