Apple MagSafe Duo Release Date May Be Right Around the Corner - Here's Why

The release date for Apple's MagSafe Duo seems imminent now that the FCC has certified a 'dual-coil charger' a month after it first appeared during the launch of the iPhone 12. Apple's MagSafe-only charger has launched along with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, but the company was hesitant to give a date for the Duo, which can simultaneously charge an iPhone and an Apple Watch. We don't have one yet, but the product is starting to be certified in various countries, including Korean regulatory agency NRRA certification and now FCC certification. Apple's ``Two-Coil Charger'' filing (FCC ID A2458) includes several proposed configurations of the device, which, while not final, closely resemble the device Apple showed off at launch. It's hard to say given that Apple's last launch event of 2020, One More Thing, announced a trio of Macs but no MagSafe devices. Of course, the accessory isn't nearly as important as a mainstream Apple device, so perhaps Apple will quietly announce its availability with a press release; Heck, the tech giant has quietly released the iPhone SE 2020 earlier this year without any hype, let alone a full launch event. There is a possibility that MagSafe Duo will hit the markets before the end of 2020, or in early 2021 after the holidays, iPhone 12 sales will expand the user base of MagSafe products.

So what's so great about MagSafe?

MagSafe is a new feature to the iPhone 12 range that uses magnets to securely hold cases, wallet clips and wireless chargers to the back of phones. Obviously, that means older iPhones won't be able to use this feature, but owners of Apple's latest phones should be a bit more excited than just getting a more foolproof wireless charging system. For example, accessory company Moment announced new MagSafe-compatible tripods and mounts that let you use your iPhone 12 like a more traditional camera. But there are others we've seen that are promising and interesting, like a car mount that seems more secure than the clamp-style mounts we've seen before. These are all third-party accessories, and we're reasonably sure Apple won't be releasing any ambitious MagSafe products. But given AirPower's demise, even an official Apple multi-device wireless charger is awesome.
