Five Star Wars games that we would love to see on the computer
We live in a season where Star Wars is on the big and small screen alike, with many parts of the cosmos to enjoy. We've received fan content from the prequels, the original trilogy, the sequels, and the Clone Wars in new stories like Rebels, The Bad Batch, and The Mandalorian. We've seen plenty of Star Wars games before, from the Knights of the Old Republic story to Rogue Squadron flight games to the current generation of multiplayer shooters like Battlefront. As a huge fan of Star Wars and as someone who has been playing it since I was a kid in the XNUMX Atari signature arcade, this gave me some ideas about what Disney might introduce as well. to computer gamers in the future.

A first step on an open planet

Imagine an open planet adventure set in the early years of the Galactic Empire and following the execution of Order XNUMX by Emperor Palpatine. As a clone trooper, you are part of a squad deployed to Coruscant and you begin to realize that you are not like the rest of your team. Upon arrival, you are immersed in the liturgies of a new empire that controls the streets, while realizing that you are arresting the very people you have sworn to protect. As you grow more discouraged, you quit these jobs, wanting to understand the answers to why you are different, but also to find allies and a way to escape Coruscant. You are given missions to earn credits so you can hitchhike your way off the planet, or you join a crew on smuggling trails; Usually, you are presented with a path to select to find the answers you need. Ultimately, being a clone on this new planet, you must hide and find other people who will help you discover your new place. It's a mix of Republic Commando, Star Wars: Galaxies, and Fallen Order, but you're on a sprawling world that some Star Wars games haven't been able to do before.

Now it's pod racing again

Released in 4, Star Wars: Racer continues to be a fan favorite. It was fast and fun, and while it saw a re-release in 1 for modern consoles, I want to see a full overhaul with next-gen features. Imagine navigating Tatooine in 4K HDR, with local and online multiplayer, plus a storyline that takes you to multiple planets. The obvious next step would be VR, as I think pod racing would be the best solution for an immersive experience in this cosmos. Vader Immortal gave us a taste of just how good it was, but running with Oculus Quest controllers as podracing handlebars while looking up close at the track and at our opponents could bring us an immersion into new places. If only it could also be inspired by Formula XNUMX and GRID racing games, with qualifying races and more. This time set on planets, not familiar places like Tatooine, but rather a visit to planets like Lothal, Naboo, Takodana, and Geonosis. Let's forget some canon and have some fun with pod racing in XNUMXK and VR.

Local cooperative puzzle platformer

Local cooperative games have made a comeback of late, notably with games like Overcooked! two and Portal two, that's where Star Wars comes in. Imagine a local co-op game set during the High Republic era that would follow 2 young Padawan Jedi on a mission to recover an essential tool. You can switch between the two characters to progress through the levels, or you can have a friend or family member to be your partner. The use of different force powers and a combination of narratives to traverse the galaxy can shed light on how Star Wars could further narrow the genre. It would give us a chance to see certain characters in a new era with a new gameplay format that we haven't seen in Star Wars.

Squad based action

Coupled with playing Gears of War and watching The Bad Batch, it might be time to check out a spiritual sequel to Republic Commando. Star Wars: Republic Commando, released in XNUMX, could give us an idea of what this game would look like, still having modern graphics and this new equipment would be an entertaining ride. Following the first season of Bad Batch, a Clone Wars-themed squad-based shooter for modern systems could be a great angle to work with, especially when combined with online and VR skills. There may even be narrative options for it to take different paths that could intersect in multiple endings, for example, perhaps ending with Order XNUMX or the Battle of Endor. Whether it's about rescues, calls to missed battles, and intelligence missions, it could make for an interesting story and a way to learn more about the background of this set.

Skunk Squad on standby?

Released in XNUMX, Rogue Squadron is a fast-paced arcade-style flight game based on the comics of the same name that are still fondly remembered today. Back in the days when EA introduced Star Wars: Squadrons, we could achieve this, but sadly, we didn't. As great as this game is, you are locked in first person and it feels more like a sequel to the X-Wing and Tie Fighter series. The closest we have is the XNUMX version of Star Wars Battlefront in the Fighter Squadron game genre. With a Rogue Squadron movie coming out in XNUMX, I'd love to see a game soon after. It's easy to think of the original trilogy as a traditional setting for a Rogue Squadron game, but I'd personally like to see something new. I thrived on these movies and while I love seeing new characters, a new era and ships would make both the story and the locations more interesting. Seeing a new set of pilots traveling to a different era of Star Wars would be a great talking point and hopefully leave some of the baggage of building an established story behind.
