6 things you should know about the new Oppo Find X5 Pro

The flagship Oppo Find X5 Pro has been launched as a halo device in a trio of new smartphones from the Chinese company, sitting atop the Find X5 and Find X5 Lite.

It's a powerful new flagship phone with plenty of features to boot, and you can relive its February 24 launch event with our live blog retrospective, but if you're short on time, you've landed on the right page.

We've broken down the six main talking points around Oppo's new tradition, so put in your napkin and grab a fork, because it's time to feast on some phone news.

1. It is ready to play

There's plenty of power under the hood of the Oppo Find X5 Pro, with Qualcomm's top-tier Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset at its heart.

We know from other devices that this is a powerful chip that can handle just about anything you throw at it, and that includes the most demanding games.

There's 12GB of RAM inside for fast charging, plus 256GB of storage, which should give you room for several big titles.

Interestingly, in the run-up to the launch, Oppo announced that the phone would use the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset, but it was Qualcomm's SoC that got name verification on stage. However, the MediaTek chip may work fine in the phone in some markets.

2. Play longer, recharge faster

The Oppo Find X5 Pro packs a 5000mAh battery. Good thing it has to power the large 6,7-inch WQHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

It's an upgrade from its predecessor, the Find X3 Pro, which didn't blow us away when it came to battery life, so we're expecting an improvement in that department with the X5 Pro.

However, a more important point is the faster charging speed both wired and wireless.

3. Don't be fooled by the Hasselblad association

Oppo proudly revealed that it worked with camera giant Hasselblad on the Find X5 Pro, but the latter's influence is relatively minor.

The camera company doesn't appear to have been involved in the camera hardware, rather its influence is felt in the user interface. That means you'll get a Hasselblad-style shutter button and sound, plus the brand's signature filters.

All told, the Find X5 Pro is still well-equipped for photography, with a trio of cameras on the rear comprising a 50MP main lens, 50MP ultra-wide lens, and 13MP telephoto lens (for 2x optical zoom).

Meanwhile around the front is a 32MP selfie camera.

4. The design is inspired by... spaceships!?

Yes, you read it right. Oppo claims that the design of the Find X5 Pro (and its siblings) was inspired by spaceships.

And, to Oppo's credit, we can see where that's coming from. The smooth moon-shaped bump of the white ceramic rear camera block against the black protective glass on the lenses has an element of intergalactic finesse.

5. It turns you into a cartoon

Why? Why not? The Oppo Find X5 Pro has an always-on display option, giving you at-a-glance information like the time, date, and icons for any new notifications.

However, it can also elicit a wry smile every time you look down as it will create a cartoon style outline of your face which can also be shown here. It doesn't have to be your face either, it can be that of a loved one: just select an image from your gallery and the Find X5 Pro will work its cartoonish magic.

6. You can book early, but it's expensive

Did the phone pique your interest? Oppo Find X5 Pro pre-orders opened on February 24 in select markets, with a sale date set for March 14.

However, for those in the UK, pre-orders don't open until March 10, with the handset (along with the standard Find X5 and the cheapest of the bunch, the Find X5 Lite) set to land in Britain on the 24th. March.

In the UK, the Find X5 Pro will set you back €1,049 (around £1,430, AU$1,690) for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration alone, slightly cheaper than the Find X3 Pro which costs €1,099. / AU$1,699 (around €1,500).

It's the same price as the 13GB iPhone 128 Max and just $100 less than the Galaxy S22 Ultra, you might want to wait for our full review to find out if the Find X5 Pro is worth the hefty price tag.

Oppo doesn't sell its phones in North America, so those who live on that continent will just have to look the other way.
