Zoom says it will block some users from meeting

The Zoom video communication platform is currently working on technology that will allow it to prevent certain users from meeting. The move comes after the US company came under fire for shutting down the accounts of three prominent human rights activists who were trying to mark the Tiananmen Square anniversary. As Forbes reported, Zoom shut down meetings and suspended or terminated host accounts after discovering that people from mainland China were participating. The company has since admitted it made a mistake by shutting down meetings entirely instead of blocking participants by country.

Going forward, Zoom will not allow Chinese government requests to affect users outside of mainland China. In a blog post, the company provided more details about the technology it is developing to block meeting attendees based on their location, saying: “Zoom is developing technologies in the coming days that will allow us to remove or block participants in function of geography. This will allow us to respond to requests from local authorities when they determine that activity on our platform is illegal within their borders; however, we may also protect these conversations for participants outside of the borders where the activity is permitted. " Although Zoom's new technology allows you to remove or block participants based on their location, its video conferencing software is still accessible via a VPN. Via City AM
