Your Samsung work phone may stop working if managed by Microsoft

Users of certain Samsung Galaxy smartphones were warned that a glitch in their device management software could cause their devices to be listed as unfit for work.

A flaw in Microsoft Intune, a cloud-based platform designed to help administrators manage business smartphones within a company, has marked some Samsung Galaxy devices as "not supported."

Reports from various users claimed that this change prevented their devices from accessing corporate networks because the MDM platform blocked them.

Microsoft Intune problem

The problem appears to start after an automatic reboot or after applying a managed update and affects devices running Android 9 and later.

Samsung Galaxy devices with Android Device Manager (DA) management or Android Enterprise personal work profiles appear to be the most affected, but fully managed Samsung devices on Android Enterprise have also been affected.

In a blog post, Microsoft said it was "aware of an issue" that could affect access to company resources, "in accordance with conditional access policies set by the IT administrator."

"We are working to resolve this issue with Samsung, but in the meantime, we wanted to provide you with more information and troubleshooting instructions to help you bring devices back into compliance," the company added.

Microsoft says that to fix the problem, Android Device Manager (DA) administration or Android Enterprise personal users need to unlock the phone, launch the Company Portal, and activate a device sync. After synchronization is complete, the device should appear compatible in Intune and access to corporate resources should be restored.

For Android Enterprise devices, users must unlock the phone, open the Device Policy Controller app, and activate a sync. After synchronization is complete, the device should appear compatible in Intune and access to corporate resources should be restored.

Microsoft says it is working with Samsung on a complete solution and will update users when they are ready, although initial reports are now several days old.
