WordPress removes compatibility with Internet Explorer
When the next version of WordPress launches later this year, the popular content management system (CMS) will no longer support Internet Explorer, according to a new post on WordPress.org. First released more than seven years ago, Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) is currently used by less than one percent of all Internet users. IE11 usage has dropped off rapidly as Microsoft now encourages users to switch to Chromium-based Edge. WordPress isn't the only popular service dropping support for IE11, as Microsoft Teams ended browser support last year and even Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer work in IE11 starting in November. For those currently using IE11, it is strongly recommended that you upgrade to Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Safari, or another modern browser. Once IE11 is no longer supported with the July release of WordPress 5.8, new features will no longer be tested in the browser and will not be guaranteed to work optimally. However, no changes will be made to any of the default themes that come with WordPress as a result of this change.

No more accidental plugin overwrites

With the release of WordPress 5.8, site owners will no longer have to worry about overwriting their plugins by updating a plugin with a similar name from the WordPress.org plugin directory. WordPress users have been asking for this feature to be added to the CMS for years, as their sites could stop working as expected as a result of automatic updates that replace a third-party plugin with one with a similar name. However, WordPress 5.8 will add a new Update URI plugin header field that will prevent updates from occurring if its value is different from https://wordpress.org/plugins/ Danemark € slug Danemark / or w.org/plugin/ Danish € slug }. If the header has any other value, the API will not return a result and will ignore the plugin for update, according to a new set of changes on WordPress.org. While this new update will apply to WordPress plugins, only time will tell if a similar change will be added in the future to prevent an update from overwriting WordPress themes. Via WordPress Tavern
