Windows 11 users voted for the return of Clippy, and now it's back (sort of)

Windows 11 has some new emoji that are Fluent-style to keep in line with the rest of Microsoft's revamped revision of the desktop operating system, and Clippy is back in the mix here (we'll talk about that later).

As revealed by Microsoft in a blog post, support for Emoji 13.1 was incorporated into the preview for the November 2021 cumulative update (which means it is still in testing).

If you want to take a look now, you can head over to Windows Update, check for the latest updates in Windows 11, and get the preview patch KB5007262.

Microsoft notes that once installed, you can press the Windows key + period (period) to cycle through the new additions in the pop-up emoji picker.

In addition to the new emoji, KB5007262 makes a number of changes including fixing some issues with File Explorer, such as fixing a bug where it stops working after closing a window.

Analysis: Clippy's back, but in 2D, not 3D

The new emoji are more modern to be in sync with the overall Fluent Design feel of Windows 11, as we mentioned at the beginning. We think they look pretty smart overall and indeed it's interesting to see Clippy appear here as a clip emoji.

You might remember that Clippy is back by popular demand, as Microsoft launched a vote for the return of the iconic assistant in July 2021, and a significant number of people approved this poll. It's a welcome and fun addition, for sure.

What struck some nerves here though is that initially (in July) Microsoft showed a preview of some 3D-style Fluent Design emoji, and these new additions are clearly straightforward 2D affairs.

In October, Brandon LeBlanc, a senior program manager for the Windows Insider team, tweeted to clarify that the 3D emojis that originally released a few months earlier were the "bad graphics" and apologized, but said. he had been tricked into believing that he was preparing something better.
