Apple AirTags will work with Android phones in some way

Eagle-eyed Apple enthusiasts have noticed that the Apple AirTags unveiled at the Spring Loaded event might be even better than we thought. According to official information from Apple, the small lost item trackers are compatible with Android phones via NFC, potentially making it easier to find your lost items. Once an Apple AirTag goes into lost mode, nearby iPhones and iPads will pick up its Bluetooth signal and anonymously ping you of the item's location through the Find My app. While Android phones still can't use the Apple Find My app, they will instead be able to use their NFC readers to get useful information (like your phone number and AirTag serial number) to return your lost item to you. We don't yet know how this will work in practice; we imagine this will be an optional feature because Apple knows that not everyone will want to give out their number to strangers, although this does show that Apple wants to do AirTag. A formidable force in the world of tracking.

Could Find My make it to Android?

If you're looking for a Find My Android Phone-style app, Google has you covered. Sign in to your device's connected Google account and use Find My Device to locate your phone. Don't hold your breath for Apple's Find My app, we can't wait for it to arrive anytime soon. We'll have to see how AirTags work in practice, but given how well iPhones are selling, we'd hope that in many parts of the world there are enough people walking around with one to provide decent coverage for the service. Apple has introduced other services to Android before, like Apple Music, so never say never. But since AirTags are supposed to be a huge selling point for the iPhone, we don't imagine Apple won't even want to give up exclusivity.
