WhatsApp makes sharing images and links more difficult, but only for iPhone users

WhatsApp is about to make an unexpected change to its iPhone app that will make it more difficult to share images, web pages, and other interesting bits with your contacts on the service. Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced a new context menu option to make it easier to send content to your contacts in the app. Just open the context menu (long press on what you want to share or use 3D Touch) and you can scroll through recently used WhatsApp contacts and share the item without having to open the messaging app first. It was a small but handy update that cut out a frustrating step and made it easier to send links and memes to your friends on a whim. However, as WABetaInfo reports, the option has been removed from the latest beta and will likely be removed from the release candidate as well. WhatsApp recently introduced several measures to stem the flow of misinformation in light of the coronavirus pandemic, notably by making it easier to verify messages and introducing a coronavirus information hub. It also put a limit on the number of times a message can be shared to prevent falsehoods from going viral. However, this new change is apparently not related to these measures and is more of an attempt to stabilize the app. While the updated context menu is a good idea in theory, users have reported frequent crashes when using it. As Digit explains, the contacts carousel has now been replaced by a simple WhatsApp icon. Tap it to open the app, which you can then use to select who to share the item with. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's nice to see WhatsApp (and parent company Facebook) taking the time to make sure the app is as stable as possible at a time when millions of people rely on it to keep in touch with friends. and relatives.
