WhatsApp's dark mode is almost there, as new finishing touches appear

Even more evidence of WhatsApp's dark mode has surfaced, suggesting its launch could be imminent.

Email app owner Facebook has recently rebranded, with a new logo and a new font. This new logo is now in the installation files of the latest beta version of WhatsApp, where it will be used as a footer and on the home screen.

As WABetaInfo explains, there are two versions of the new Facebook branding in the installation files: one for light backgrounds and one for dark backgrounds.

These little additions are the kind of finishing touches that could be added in the final stages of development, and suggest that dark mode for WhatsApp could be out in a few weeks, for beta testers anyway.

If you want to be the first to try it out when it's available, you'll need to sign up for the WhatsApp beta program. You can join the Android beta program through Google Play, but keep in mind that it can take a few hours to download the app. The iOS beta program is currently full, but if slots open up, you'll be able to sign up through Apple TestFlight.

What to expect

From previous dives into the app's active files, we already know that there are probably two dark modes for WhatsApp: one mainly dark grey/teal and one mainly black. The latter could be intended for phones with AMOLED screens, because the black pixels of these screens are disabled, which helps save energy.

The installation files contain various assets for both color schemes, including a couple of default wallpapers that are recolored versions of the app's standard light gray background pattern.

There are also cat bubbles, recolored icons and buttons, and with the addition of new Facebook branding, it seems almost everything is in place. We will keep you posted and let you know as soon as WhatsApp dark mode is available for testing.
