SEE – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 introduces multiplayer mode

Activision has given our first look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer in a new trailer.

Revealed during the Call of Duty Next live stream, the new clip from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 gives us our first look at many of the game's new features in action. The game's Gunsmith weapon customizer has been revamped, water is now the focus of the game, and even player movement has been improved with new toys, such as the ledge hanger.

Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer design director Geoff Smith says the team took a close look at different "player behaviors" to advance Call of Duty's next multiplayer experience. They added a ton of new mechanics as a result of this, both building on previous Call of Duty games, as well as adding some totally new ideas.

You can check out the trailer below to see it all for yourself. You can also sign up for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta now.

Water

Joseph Cicot, Co-Design Director of Joseph Cicot Multiplayer for Modern Warfare 2, said that water is more important than ever in Call of Duty. While some environmental designs have gone into previous games, like the frozen lakes in Warzone, the "aquatic experience" will be central to Modern Warfare 2.

You'll need to use bodies of water as cover to avoid enemy fire, jump into lakes to evade enemies, and be careful to avoid ships and floating mines. Only certain weapons work underwater, so you'll have to rely on your pistol instead of your primary weapon. But even they will feel different underwater.

Movement

Modern Warfare 2 introduces many new ways to move around the maps. Instead of just walking or running through corridors, you'll be sneaking around to avoid enemy fire.

“Fluid movement is very important to us,” Cicot said. You'll be able to slide and climb over obstacles, but now you'll also be able to grab onto a ledge while unloading your weapon. The idea is to give you more protection from incoming fire.

It should make for some pretty cinematic moments. Activision says you'll be able to dive through windows to escape grenades or peek around corners to smother enemies in tactical combat.

(*2*)Gunsmith 2.0

Call of Duty's weapon customization system has received a major overhaul. Attachments will now be shared between all weapons, meaning you'll change gear faster, without having to grind each weapon. The idea is to make weapons more personal to you by equipping them with exactly the attachments you want.

As expected, there are plenty of accessories to choose from. You can exchange muzzles, sights, rear grip, charger, grips, receiver, etc. This should create a deeper gunsmith system that caters to a wider variety of players.
