Absurd critters Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: From windmill arms to invisible bicycles

The recent release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has fans of the series talking, but not necessarily for the right reasons.

Scroll through the Twitter feeds of tech-savvy Pokemon trainers, who have already started their journey on Paldea, and you'll find a mix of reviews. Among the usual cute Pokemon clips and thoughtful opinions are examples of some of the wackier Pokemon blunders seen in the 26-year-old series to date, some of which we've experienced ourselves. In her review of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, TRG's Cat Bussell said the games were "full of framerate drops, performance issues, and more than the occasional bug."

Fortunately for Japanese developer Game Freak, however, many Pokémon fans see the funny side of these bugs and glitches; in fact, some are even useful. From helpful cheats to silly, we've rounded up the weirdest Pokemon Scarlet and Violet bugs and glitches we've spotted online here for you to enjoy.

Playing Pokémon is as easy as riding a bike; if you did it once, you can do it again. But Scarlet and Violet make players wonder: what if that bike was invisible?

That's what Twitter user OoCPokemon shows us in the clip above, where the player is seen riding an invisible machine that looks like a bicycle.

But wait: what if the bike wasn't a bike, but a Legendary Pokémon called Koraidon or Miraidon? What if you could drive it through your friends' bodies (without hurting them, of course) while pushing another meter and a half like some kind of hideous bike-loving Slenderman?

Both of the above issues seem to kick in when you switch to your trusty Pokemon-slash-vehicle friend right out of the box: Koraidon for Pokemon Scarlet owners and Miraidon if you've acquired Pokemon Purple. Players have encountered some seriously weird glitches while playing co-op, so it's worth teaming up with a friend to see what new hell their poor overworked Nintendo Switch conjures up.

Oh, and speaking of co-op, this issue probably made a lot of gamers' eyes widen when they first encountered it. Kocha8164 on Twitter shared this bizarre clip from gameplay in which one of the two on-screen characters appears to have his physical assets totally hacked away, with his eyes popping out of his face like on an old Cartoon Network show.

It's both scary and fun, but we see how this one could get boring after a while.

What goes up...

This is probably the dumbest, but most useful cheat on Scarlet/Violet. You can easily climb hills you shouldn't just by backing up. pic.twitter.com/RRwveA1m9jNovember 20, 2022

However, if you were looking for something a little more serious, Twitter user ZullieTheWitch has you covered with this bug finder that really comes in handy.

According to the clip above, you can rig the game to allow you to scale high ground simply by jumping onto a wall and quickly backtracking. This allows you to skip areas of the map entirely, which isn't necessarily great if you're exploring the game for the first time, but it will save you a lot of time if you need to go back.

Finally, this latest ruling gives new meaning to the term “air guitar”. Twitter user Kalhan R shared a clip in which one of his characters appeared to be struggling with his movements, arms and head flailing comically.

MissingNothing

It's too early to tell if Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will top the lists of the best Pokemon games of all time, but just because the game is riddled with a litany of bugs doesn't mean it won't.

The same can be said for Pokémon Go's high ranking, which has seen its fair share of bugs since its release in 2016.

Although widely viewed as a negative, the Pokemon games are notorious for their problems. The most famous of these has to be the mysterious case of the 152nd Pokemon Red and Blue Pokemon, MissingNo(Opens in a new tab).

This bug created an entirely new Pokemon if the player followed a specific set of instructions, and MissingNo even allowed you to duplicate your items, which is actually another bug (opens in a new tab) itself in Scarlet and Violet.

Despite the bugs, glitches, and other glitches that are very telltale about the Switch's less-muscled framework, Scarlet and Violet still reaped the coin after selling more than ten million copies (opens in a new tab) in three days.

There's a lot of damage control to be done, but if Game Freak can make it up to users who are discouraged by bugs while allowing us to continue this sneaky uphill maneuver, I'd be happy.
