Virgin Media O2 creates a unique connected playground

Virgin Media O2 offers children a glimpse of the future with its connected gaming experience that uses its gigabit broadband network and 5G mobile network to power lights, sound and interactive equipment.

The connected playground is a hybrid of traditional play and technology. This concept was born from research on parents' perceptions of their children's gaming habits and the role technology plays in their development.

Research has found that almost two-thirds of UK parents (64%) worry that their children are not getting enough outdoor stimulation. Seven in 10 (68%) believe their children need more technology-equipped playgrounds.

Unique outdoor experience

Following the results of this research, Virgin Media O2 took over Kings Square Gardens in Islington to create an outdoor gaming experience that encourages creativity, smart play and technology.

This gaming device has been enhanced with sensors and pressure pads to make it interactive. Includes climbing frames, swings, slides and climbing structures.

Each interaction with the playground equipment changes the key and tempo of a piece that can be heard through speakers spread throughout the playing area. Music can be downloaded so they can take it home and listen to it again later.

Virgin Media O2 and Dallington Primary have teamed up to give children aged six to nine the opportunity to express their creativity through a musical challenge.

Dr Sam Wass, child psychologist and Channel 4's Secret Life of 5 & 4-Year-Olds expert, highlighted the scientific evidence supporting that playing outside benefits children's mood and concentration. However, as a parent, it can be difficult to encourage children to embrace digital play, as children's expectations and experiences are constantly changing. Wass said: "New hybrid environments, such as Virgin Media's O2 connected playground, could in future play a vital role in encouraging children to embrace technology in outdoor settings and help provide them with the tools they need. to think and play creatively.

Gareth Malone (father and star of The Choir) pointed out that his children live in a world connected to gadgets and gadgets. "It's the world they grew up in." Therefore, it is essential that youngsters get out there and play with an enthusiasm that matches what they love to do. “Virgin Media's O2 Connected Playground is a great example of this. It uses technology, lighting, sounds and musical elements to provide the sense of achievement that all children seek when they play. I'm intrigued to see what else can be done with future technologies and connectivity. »
