Verizon and Amazon have announced a new strategic collaboration that will see US telecommunications take advantage of the e-commerce giant's Project Kuiper to bring enhanced connectivity to rural and remote communities across the United States. Like Space X's Starlink, Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase broadband access globally using a constellation of 3326 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites around the planet. When complete, the system will serve individual households, schools, hospitals, businesses, and other organizations that operate in locations where Internet access is limited or unavailable. Amazon has already committed an initial €10 billion to fund Project Kuiper, which will provide fast and affordable broadband to customers and communities around the world. Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg explained how this new strategic collaboration will build on the company's existing partnership with Amazon in a press release, saying: “The Kuiper project offers unique flexibility and capabilities for a LEO satellite system, and we're excited about the prospect of adding a complementary layer of connectivity to our existing partnership with Amazon. We know the future will depend on our industry-leading 5G network, designed for mobility, fixed wireless access, and real-time cloud computing. Most importantly, we believe that the power of this technology should be available to everyone. Today's announcement will help us explore ways to close this gap and accelerate the benefits and innovation of wireless connectivity, which will benefit our customers globally and locally.
