Ubisoft has shut down online multiplayer for 90 games, and there are some surprises

Ubisoft has stopped online multiplayer for 90 games, including Rayman Legends for PC and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 for Xbox One.

The announcement on Ubisoft's website lists the 90 affected games, covering a variety of platforms including PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360, and even the OnLive cloud gaming service. These titles will no longer feature online multiplayer, but the offline features of each game will still be available.

The server shutdown means that news and in-game stats for these Ubisoft games will also be disabled from now on. And any title that used Ubisoft Connect services will no longer allow players to earn units and complete challenges.

While it can be argued that many titles are old at this point, as well as the platforms included, backwards compatibility means that several of these games will no longer be fully complete if players revisit them. . Several of the affected games can be played on Xbox One, like Just Dance, for example, but they will no longer have online support.

Here is the full list of Ubisoft games that no longer have online multiplayer support:

Another blow to the preservation of video games

legends of rayman

Seeing so many Ubisoft games lose support online is worrying, especially since there will be people who will still be playing those games. While it's easy to see why a publisher makes such decisions (hosting and server maintenance aren't free), it's still disappointing.

Fortunately, we've seen a resurgence in recent years to preserve video games through backwards compatibility. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have all been guilty of ditching the old for the new, but there has clearly been a clear shift to do more to ensure that a new generation of gamers can still play and enjoy old titles.

Microsoft, in particular, has led the way with its Xbox backwards compatibility program, while Sony will soon offer access to its older titles through its new PS Plus subscription service. Nintendo has taken a similar route, giving Nintendo Switch Online subscribers access to hundreds of NES and SNES games, while those who subscribe to the Expansion Pack level can play N64 and Sega Genesis games.

In an ideal world, no game would need to lose features and gamers would not need specific hardware to enjoy them. Unfortunately, we expect to see more games lose online functionality in the coming years, and more digital storefronts are likely to be closed.
