Redfall trailer, gameplay, release date and more
Redfall is a recently announced IP from Arkane Studios, first announced at E3 2021. We still have a lot to learn about the game, but the trailer showed four characters fighting vampires in a city. Post-apocalyptic, washed down with a delicious retro aesthetic of horror. Redfall is currently slated for a summer 2022 release and when it does arrive, it will be an Xbox console exclusive, landing on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass on day one. The Xbox One was missing from the list of available platforms at the end of the trailer, meaning Redfall could very well be a current-gen title. While not much is currently known about Redfall, we'll be sure to keep you posted on any news regarding this upcoming co-op shooter as it lands.

Come to the point

Redfall Trailer

While the first trailer for Redfall was a good chunk of CG goodness, there are currently no actual gameplay footage to speak of. But judging from the scenes shown in the trailer, we can piece together an appearance of what we can expect from Redfall in 2022.

Redfall release date

The first trailer for Redfall gave us the tentative release window for "Summer 2022." At this point, expect the game to release anytime between June and September 2022, not taking into account any delays that could arise as development continues. That being said, Redfall may have already been in development for at least a few years. A few years ago, a trademark dispute between Zenimax (Bethesda's parent company) and author Jay Falconer brought the name "Redfall" to light. At the time, Redfall was supposed to be the subtitle for The Elder Scrolls 6, as the name was similar to both Daggerfall (a kingdom as part of The Elder Scrolls in Tamriel) and the Redguard race series.

Redfall gameplay

The official Redfall website describes the game as "an open world cooperative shooter" and will be played in first person. The trailer introduced four different characters that we will likely be playing with. The main form of offense seems to be the weapons the characters use, but each of the four heroes seems to have their own unique abilities, similar to those in the Borderlands series. The website says that Redfall will blend "single-player and multiplayer options seamlessly, allowing the player to venture into the dark solo or team up with up to three friends for four-player co-op." The use of the word "seamless" implies that a direct co-op system could be implemented in Redfall, allowing players to join someone else's game without having to return to the main menu. Redfall seems to cater to players who prefer solo play, with the official website stating that you can choose to build your characters by playing solo. If you were worried about not being able to party with friends in Redfall, it looks like Arkane has you covered. Finally, the Redfall website states that the game's open world will be "constantly evolving" and will be a "parameter that reacts to your choices and actions." It looks like Arkane's fondness for gameplay and instant picks will carry over to Redfall as well, and we're curious to see how much of our personal decision-making will translate into endgame.

Redfall history

The Redfall website gives us a brief overview of the game's story, setting, and the larger-than-life characters that inhabit the world. The vampire enemies in the game are actually science experiments gone wrong. These creatures separate the city of Redfall from the rest of the world by blocking out the sun. The vampires are joined by a human faction that reveres them, as seen in the first trailer. As such, it seems that firefights will often have you facing both types of enemies, and perhaps a few others, at the same time. Our main characters are Devinder Crousley, Layla Ellison, Jacob Boyer and Remi De La Rosa. They all have very different personalities and most likely play very differently from each other. We'll be interested to see how these characters bounce off each other at the end of the game.

Redfall news and rumors

Images of the game have reportedly been leaked online. Supposedly leaked images of a Redfall playtest have surfaced online (via IGN), perhaps giving us a better idea of what to expect from the game. The leaker claims that the game will enter the looter shooter genre, drawing influence from Borderlands while incorporating elements from Arkane's own Dishonored games. According to the leaker, the test featured six predefined playable heroes (we only know of four so far) and these heroes "each have unique abilities reminiscent of those found in games like Dishonored" and those abilities "are enhanced through assassinations and missions". They describe the game as "An open-world hero-based looter shooter with single-player and co-op, featuring various forms of missions across the globe, as well as fast travel and safe havens." Very Borderlands-esque. The leak and images also indicate that characters can carry up to three weapons at once, with "potentially 5 tiers" of weapons with higher tier ones appearing to "come with additional perks like increased accuracy or increased damage." Of course, any leak has to be taken with a pretty big pinch of salt. It's also worth noting that while these images are real, what we see of them now and what's actually releasing in 2022 could change a lot.
