This Microsoft Outlook update will bring back much-loved retro images

Microsoft Outlook users will soon be able to customize their interface with a nod to the past thanks to a new update.

The messaging service will soon support two new types of "ribbons": the menu bar where options and tools are displayed.

The two new ribbon types are called "Simplified" and "Classic" and are intended to give users a more personalized, yet familiar, view of their email inboxes and folders.

The new additions are a nod to the past and may be familiar to those who have been using Outlook for a while. In its Microsoft 365 roadmap post (opens in a new tab), the company notes that the new ribbons are modeled after their counterparts in classic Outlook for Windows platforms, to "provide a more familiar experience through the apps.

The new ribbons will soon be rolling out to all Outlook Web users, and the roadmap page states that while the new additions are still "in development," they have an expected general availability date of September 2022, so so users won't have too long to wait

Microsoft has been hard at work modifying and updating its messaging platform over the past few months to ensure users have the best possible experience.

The company recently unveiled its new "One Outlook" platform, with the updated service offering a clean, minimalist aesthetic in line with the Windows 11 design philosophy, while also hosting related apps like Calendar and Contacts.

Microsoft also recently alerted users that Outlook on the web will soon change the location of some of its message composition options.

Changes include "Send", "Delete" and formatting options. The post also doesn't mention exactly where the options are moved, but it should look very similar to the existing layout in the desktop version of Outlook, as Microsoft says the change "brings the web experience closer to classic and new Outlook for Windows."
