Here's how Grid Studio brings framed nostalgia from Apple, Nintendo, and Sony to your walls

Here's how Grid Studio brings framed nostalgia from Apple, Nintendo, and Sony to your walls Last year, a company called Grid Studio lovingly took apart some devices and placed them in picture frames for customers to hang in their homes. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and that includes the devices we used every day, before they were replaced by a more powerful model. We may remember how we used them at important events in our lives, or what our firsts were like, be it our first smartphone, handheld computer, or first watch. For many of us, it's good to remember the devices that made the biggest difference to us. This is where Grid Studio comes in. Established in September 2020 and based in Shenzhen, China, a team of six separates long-abandoned products and frames them into compelling designs that anyone can buy. We've received a few that show how good these devices look deconstructed in a frame.

Back to the past

After buying an iPhone 4 frame a few months ago, seeing a PlayStation Portable, Apple Watch Series 1 and iPhone 3GS side by side really makes you realize just how big or small the components that made up these wearable products were, that they were small enough to fit in our pockets or purses when we were at school or our first jobs. The PSP struck me immediately, stretched out over a square frame displaying the components that made up Sony's first handheld game console, released in 2004. It takes me back to a time when some friends and I were playing GTA: Liberty. City Stories in the common room during college.

Once you remove the frame, nostalgia hits you like cold water: the components are spread out over the frame, with each piece's logo and descriptions elegantly outlined. You can tell that each frame is made with passion with the purpose of showing the deconstructed device in all its glory. After hanging them on the desktop, there's the temptation of more, but also of what Grid Studio might do next. From consoles to Apple Macs, there's a lot of potential here to tap into the nostalgia of each generation of computers and gaming devices. They start at €169.99 in the US and €139.99 (around AU$229) plus shipping, but delivery usually takes a week to arrive. It's a perfect gift for yourself or someone who has a lot of good memories using certain devices. Image 1 of 6

Study of the supply grid

While the business has only been open for 18 months, it has already made an impact in offices around the world. We asked how the business got started and what future products might be on the horizon. “One of our founders had a lightbulb moment after taking apart his own equipment, hand-painting designs and gluing the pieces onto paper, and made a great piece of art. At first, it was just a hobby, but one of our partners thought that he should share it with more people who also love this kind of art, so Grid Studio basically started to go away. From there,” Joe, one of the three co-founders of Grid Studio, told us. “We work with partners who help us recover material, usually cell phone repair shops and some agents. " With the number of orders increasing as the news spreads, Joe realizes that creating these frames can be a challenge. "It's completely difficult. As you know, most of the equipment is very old. We have to select and clean it several times to make sure it looks good. And the size and weight of some equipment is too large, we need to use more glue to paste, which requires multiple tests to make sure it does not fall off.

(Image credit: TechRadar) Apple's iPad VP has also requested a Grid Studio executive. “We can't sell a frame with more volume and weight right now, but not too long ago we made a first-generation iPad frame for VP of iPad Product Marketing. But due to the heavy weight and volume, we spend a lot of time to deal with the shipping problems because the cost is very high. We are looking for a better solution to this problem so that we can offer this and other products in the future. " We wondered why such a market for these executives already exists, and what the company could do. “It was born out of a hobby at first, and we didn't expect to be loved by so many tech fans because of the nostalgia for what we come up with. A Many Apple employees like our products too, so we've gained a lot of trust through all of this. Our next plan is to continue to complement the Google Pixel series frames, the Game Boy line, and then the Sony PlayStation.
