The Witcher season 3 synopsis

It's no surprise that the show returns to production just four months after the start of the second season.

When TechRadar spoke to The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich when the second season was scheduled to premiere on Netflix, she revealed that the third season of the series was almost written and on its way to being refined.

Pressed for details on what we could expect from the third season, Hissrich revealed that creator Andrzej Sapkowski's second main novel in The Witcher saga, The Time of Contempt, will provide most of the material for the new series.

She said: "I'm really excited about how Season 3 is going. Because it's based on my favorite book in the series, which is The Time of Contempt. I feel like Seasons 1 and 2 set the stage for everything that's to come.

On top of that, Hissrich also revealed to Collider that a "big Blood of Elves story," the first novel in The Witcher saga, will be part of the third season story.

Will the third season of The Witcher be the last?

Good God, no. Netflix has big plans for The Witcher, with a prequel, The Witcher: Blood Origin, set to be released in 2022. Set 1200 years before Netflix's main series, Blood Origin will cover the creation of the first Witcher. The show will also follow the events leading up to and during the Conjunction of the Spheres, the cataclysm that results in multiple universes and their human, elven, and monstrous races colliding.

On top of that, a family anime series and a second anime film were announced in September 2021 to follow 2021's The Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf.

Netflix has yet to renew The Witcher for a fourth season, but Hissrich is planning seven seasons and stars Henry Cavill and Freya Allen have firmly committed to staying the course.
