The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra could have a much brighter screen than the iPhone 13

The Samsung Galaxy S22 line will inevitably be compared to the iPhone 13 line, as Apple is Samsung's biggest smartphone rival. But there is at least one area where the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra could have a substantial advantage over any iPhone.

According to Ice Universe (a leaker with a good track record), the maximum brightness of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is higher than the maximum brightness of any other Samsung OLED panel.

They haven't said exactly how bright it can be, but the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is already hitting 1.500 nits. For comparison, the iPhone 13 line exceeds every 1200 nits. So Samsung's current flagship may already be brighter than Apple's phones, and if this leak is correct, the next one will be even brighter.

Don't trust the same update for the standard Samsung Galaxy S22 or Galaxy S22 Plus. Ice Universe doesn't mention them, and the Samsung Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Plus don't get as bright as the S21 Ultra (although they do achieve an impressive 1.300 nits).

Speaking of the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus, in a slightly older leak, the same source claimed that they would have flat screens and flat rear panels, as well as a symmetrical bezel, adding that it left them similar to the iPhone 13 range. - although without notch.

We're not convinced that they really look alike, as the leaks suggest that the camera's design is significantly different from the iPhone and they won't have a notch. Additionally, the Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus already have a flat screen and nearly symmetrical bezels, so the only real change here would be a flat back, rather than the slightly curved edges of current models.

Review: Watch the S22 Ultra, but not for its brightness

From everything we've heard so far, it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus will look a lot like their predecessors, with most of the cool updates reserved for the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

That includes a new Note-like design, an S Pen slot, and according to this latest leak, a brighter display. But making the screen brighter isn't likely to be a very noticeable improvement most of the time.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra already has one of the brightest displays you'll find on a smartphone, and that extra brightness will only benefit primarily from direct sunlight, which can otherwise leave screens discolored.

Still, we generally don't find the Galaxy S21 Ultra hard to see, so the S22 Ultra's display might be a bit better in these conditions, which is probably not a reason to buy it.
