The new film from the creator of Squid Game looks even more disturbing than the Netflix series

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has hinted that his next project, a movie called Killing Old People Club, won't be for the faint-hearted.

"It's going to be more violent than Squid Game (Opens in a new tab)," the director revealed in a recent interview with Variety (Opens in a new tab), adding that the feature is sure to be "another controversial movie."

We know that Killing Old People Club is based on an unnamed novel by Italian novelist and philosopher Umberto Eco, though details surrounding its plot remain under wraps at this time. Eco, who died in 2016, was known for producing works focused on philosophy and religion. So there's a good chance these themes could play into Hwang's secret project.

In our book, though, it's equally likely that the director of Miss Granny and The Fortress simply wrote a fancy script about young people killing old people.

Blood-soaked slasher movies have seen a resurgence of late, with Texas Chainsaw Massacre (opens in a new tab) and All of Us Are Dead among the newest examples of the genre, and Hwang's claim that his next film will still be more violent than Squid Game portends an equally gruesome image.

Such a film would not seem totally foreign to the Korean public either. The likes of Oldboy, Train to Busan, and The Handmaiden have all shown their willingness (and tendency for Korean directors) to embrace graphic design, so it's a safe bet that Hwang will continue the trend with Killing Old People Club.

Variety reports that it has now shipped a 25-page treatment for the highly anticipated project, but it's unlikely to hit screens until 2023 at the earliest.

When is Squid Game Season 2?

In the same Variety interview, Hwang also revealed that he will soon be returning home to South Korea to begin work on Squid Game Season 2, which he hopes will hit Netflix in 2024.

Netflix's hit series took the world by storm in 2021, inspiring everything from real-life robot dolls to amateur video game adaptations on its way to becoming the biggest show in streaming history (after just 28 days, Squid Game racked up an all-time record.) maximum of 1.600 billion hours watched).

Al hacerlo, la serie de supervivencia también cambió literally el juego de cómo Netflix mide el éxito de sus películas y programas de televisión. Following the popularity of Squid Game, the streaming service moved away from the two minutes per view metric it previously used to instead record the total number of hours watched in the first month of release. a title.

As a result, it's now much easier for fans to watch Netflix's biggest series (and Netflix's biggest movies) of any given week, though no project has yet threatened Squid Game's crown.

Netflix officially renewed Squid Game season 2 in January 2021, when co-CEO Ted Sarandos said that "the Squid Game universe has just begun." We knew that director Hwang was working on a film project (which we now know to be Killing Old People Club) at the time, so it's not too surprising to hear that new Squid Game episodes won't be coming for some time. hour.
