The new Facebook Messenger app is a great alternative to Zoom for Windows and Mac

Facebook Messenger has been around for almost a decade, but it has only just become available as a desktop app for Windows and Mac OS. The departure comes at a very opportune time, with more and more people working at home today and relying on video conferencing tools like Zoom and Skype. You may have already seen a Facebook Messenger app for Windows, you may have even installed it already, and you may be confused (we were!), but this is a new unified app for Microsoft and Apple desktop platforms and it has many new features. And of course there is a dark mode option. Facebook says that over the last month, it has noticed a 100% increase in audio and video calls from desktop web browsers. While using Messenger on the Facebook website is fine, a dedicated desktop app makes it much easier; it's much easier to switch between apps and websites while chatting, for example. There is, of course, the great advantage of being able to chat on a larger screen, which is important if you're chatting with multiple people. Chats are synced between your computer and mobile device, and you can manage notifications to receive alerts as much or as little as you want. The desktop app works just like the mobile versions and includes dark mode, GIF support, audio clip recording, etc.

Although Facebook Messenger offers an alternative to Zoom, it won't suit everyone. Unlike the free version of Zoom, there's no time limit on video calls, but the eight-party limit means the app won't be suitable for many businesses for conference calls. However, for gatherings with friends and family, it is perfect. You can download Facebook Messenger for macOS from the Mac App Store and for Windows from the Microsoft Store.
