Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie takes influence from games and books

New details about the 2023 Star Wars Rogue Squadron movie have been revealed by director Patty Jenkins, who says the movie "does something original with heavy influence from games and books." That's according to a new interview with IGN. Rogue Squadron means one thing to a generation of Star Wars fans: video games about the X-Wings and other rogue spaceships blowing up the Empire on a variety of Star Wars planets. "There is a lot that is recognized and understood about the greatness of all these things, but yes, it is an original story and I am very excited to do it," added Jenkins. The film will be about a new generation of fighter pilots who take big risks on their journey to become the best in the galaxy. The film has been confirmed to be set in a "future era" of the Star Wars universe, which we think could go beyond the 2019 period of The Rise of Skywalker. The film's story is coming up as well, and Jenkins has nearly completed a detailed treatment of Rogue Squadron's story with an as-yet-unknown screenwriter. "We're finishing up the bulk processing, which is pretty big," Jenkins told Collider. "So it ends up being like you're pretty close to a very advanced stage when I'm done with rendering in my process. So yeah, we've been working on it for a while. It's going really well. I'm really excited about it. I'm really excited with history." Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will hit theaters in time for Christmas 2023.

What's in a name?

Rogue Squadron has different meanings for Star Wars fans. The games were about Luke Skywalker's X-Wing pilot group, mostly set between the original trilogy movies. They were fantastic, though it's hard to see how they could be used for an original movie, other than maybe the interplay between the pilots or the choice of locations. More relevant, perhaps, is the X-Wing series of books, which were set after Return of the Jedi and saw ace pilot from Wedge West Indies create a new iteration of Rogue Squadron. The first book, by author Michael A Stackpole, was called Rogue Squadron. These books are no longer canon, so Jenkins is free to tell a different story. Whatever this movie is, then, expect plenty of Star Wars space battles.
