MacBook Air with M1 already outperforms 16-inch MacBook Pro
On November 10, we finally met the first line of highly anticipated MacBooks and Mac minis powered by ARM technology. Bold promises were made early on for the new chipset, stating that M1 silicon would have the highest performance per watt in the world. Although we were skeptical at first, the latest benchmarking results revealed that the claims made at the event may carry some weight.

Not just bold statements?

(Image credit: Geekbench) We can take a look at the performance of the new M1 chip from the benchmark results of the new MacBook Air (2020) that appeared on Geekbench on November 11. The machine has 8 GB of RAM, runs at 3,2 GHz, and has a single-core score of 1.687 and a multi-core score of 7.433. Both scores beat the existing 16-inch MacBook Pro with an Intel Core i9 processor, which by contract scored 1096 on the single-core test and 6870 on the multi-core test. This effectively means that the single-core performance seen in the new ARM-powered MacBook Air is better than any other Mac available, and puts it firmly on the first page of Geekbench results.

Simple benchmark results (Image credit: Geekbench) While the Geekbench results are interesting, they should be taken with a grain of salt. It's certainly exciting to see this kind of performance in a fanless machine, but these scores don't tell the whole story when comparing wildly different technologies. We'll have to see if these benchmarks really translate to any notable performance when released into the wild.
