The latest Windows 10 patch breaks OneDrive, but a fix is coming
(*10*)Some Windows 10 users experienced OneDrive crashes after installing the latest set of patches for the operating system, and Microsoft has now confirmed this issue.

(*10*) As detected by Neowin (opens in a new tab), the issue was caused by the October patch for Windows 10, KB5018410, which was released a few weeks ago. OneDrive and OneDrive for Business users may be affected (with several reports - opens in a new tab) of bugs appearing on Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2 installations and then disappearing when the patch is uninstalled).

(*10*)This particular bug is capable of causing OneDrive to "quit unexpectedly," Microsoft admits, or throwing an error message in some cases, even when:

(*10*) The KB5018410 patch also caused Microsoft Edge-related issues for some users, who may find that the update removes the legacy version of Microsoft Edge without replacing the browser with the new Edge app as it should.

Analysis: a quick resolution with a bit of luck

(*10*)Okay, so what can you do about this OneDrive headache? Well, not much at this point other than removing KB5018410 to get the cloud storage service up and running again. The downside is that the patch contains important security fixes, and obviously you will be without this protection after abandoning the update.

(*10*)However, Microsoft said in a Dashboard status update that a fix for the bug is not far away. The company wrote (opens in a new tab): "We are working on a resolution and expect a fix to be available next week."

(*10*)Presumably this means the cure will arrive next week, though of course this is just an estimate from Microsoft. So if the gremlin is buried deeper in the works than you might think, and other complications arise during the repair process, it may take longer to arrive. As always, I hope for a quick and painless recovery here.
