The latest price leaks on PS5 are insane, and we can't trust them
As their holiday 2020 launch windows approach, we're learning more and more about the PS5 and Xbox Series X, and this week we see exactly why we can't believe PS5 prices have "fled" A As the new console hype begins to build, gamers tend to look at their wallets afterwards. Yet despite a solid grasp of the consoles internal specs (if not the external design, then in the case of the PS5), one essential factor still eludes us: the PS5's price. The internet is full of wheelchair-bound economists calculating the cost of all these components, and web-scouring sleuths spotting any sign of a pre-order page at retailers and spewing the price like a coded message from the gods of Sony. and Microsoft at the top. But you can't trust them, and this week, we saw perfect evidence that retail prices simply shouldn't be believed until Sony announces the cost. The latest PS5 price rumors

Two leaks this week in particular have had fanboys and female fans in a frenzy over the potential price of the PS5, and the two couldn't be further from each other. First, take a look at the Danish retailer føtex. It lists the PlayStation 5 for a pre-order price of DKK6,989, which converts to around €1,043 / €837. That's a staggering price, especially compared to PS4's launch cost of €399 / €349. Then Canadian retailer Play N Trade Vancouver Island, which kicked off pre-orders for the PS5 at CA$559.99. This works out to roughly US$396 or €318. Which, even compared to the PS4, is an absolute steal. And as such, as many shots in the dark as the Danish price.

Riddles and estimates for a guaranteed custom

This is an obvious point, but the fact remains that, until Sony (and by the way Microsoft) give an official word on the price of the next-gen console, we won't be any more sure of the price than if we asked the 'psychic octopus who predicts sports results. The year 2020, as it progresses, becomes one of the most difficult of all time to make economic forecasts. Although the PS5 and Xbox Series X are on track for their planned release dates, the Covid-19 pandemic is decimating the workforce around the world and disrupting the supply chains needed to create all kinds of devices. The ripple effect on component prices and potential shortages has yet to be felt, and as such should not yet be reflected in a price tag.

(Image credit: Letsgodigital) Sony and Microsoft are likely to wait until the last minute to finalize pricing as they weigh more accurate projections of the margins they will make on their hardware sales. Significantly, the exterior design of the PS5 is yet to be revealed, and the coronavirus epidemic has almost certainly disrupted plans to do so there as well. As for retailers, they're just as eager for the news as fans of the game themselves, but for very different reasons. The sooner they can start entering a price, the sooner they can start saving money to allow it. They'll realize that the first set of stock for a new console is often below demand, and that gamers will be happy to rack up early cash to secure a day-to-day machine. Whether the price is higher or lower than the recommended retail price makes little difference: there will be terms and conditions, in most cases, that will ensure the safety of the retailer and the customer in the event of a large cost discrepancy. . Retailers may change what they charge for prices to stay competitive once a fixed price is revealed, and players are unlikely to withdraw an order once placed for fear of inevitably running out of stock if they do. And the wide variety of pre-order price tags will remain the norm until Sony shows its real hand. For now then, relax.
