Intel Core i9-9900KS processor reaches 5.2 GHz, and could be an overclocker's dream

Intel's incoming Core i9-9900KS, a new high-end processor that should be released later in October, would have already been bought by a Redditor and overclocked with impressive results - just 5.2 GHz in the air (i.e. no fancy) liquid solution. Cooling).

However, as is often the case with this type of leak prior to publication, we have to wonder if it could be fabricated, even though the Reddit residents in question posted a (presumed) image of the retail box. . Apparently, the chip was incorrectly cataloged, and incorrectly sold, by a retailer in the Czech Republic.

The Redditor admits to being a "Total Noob (overclocking)" and using only air cooling, a Noctua NH D15, has overclocked the processor to 5.2 GHz on all cores with a voltage set at 1.36 V, when comparing Cinebench R20.

Assuming this is authentic, this seems to be an impressive indicator of the overclocking potential of the Core i9-9900KS. Although the actual Cinebench result obtained is not totally amazing.

The chip registered a result of 5,356 and as Tom's Hardware pointed out, a stock of 9900K has reached 4,984, so the overclocked 9900KS is 7% faster in this comparison. Although 9900K overclocked at 5GHz gets 5,266, the gain is only 1,7% in this case.

That said, it's just a yardstick, and not a gaming yardstick, that's where the real interest is going to be, and of course the 9900KS may have a lot more potential to push even further given that this result was obtained by a self-confessed beginner with a simple air cooler. It should also be noted that the so-called 9900KS was associated with only the "cheapest DDR4 RAM" (2666 MHz) that the Redditor could find.

Very good chip

The Redditor also noted: "Very good chip indeed. In a 16-thread test of PrimeFT at 16 FFT, it managed to stay at about 5020 MHz throughout the test, which I stopped after 20 minutes. Cooled with NH-D15, it reached a maximum temperature of 83 ° C and an average temperature of 75 ° C during the test. I have not touched the BIOS settings yet, so all these results are ready to use. "

And in GTA Online, the Intel Core i9-9900KS ran at 5.010 MHz and remained "solid" with a CPU load hovering around 15% and a temperature of 57 ° C.

Intel has already been busy pointing out that the processor is capable of achieving the promised 5GHz boost across eight cores, drawing comparisons to AMD's recent controversy on boost clocks not exceeding advertised levels. And this little anecdotal piece of evidence (again, assuming all of this is true) seems to confirm this...

The Core i9-9900KS is essentially a highly integrated version of the 9900K, which means that Intel has just reserved the best versions of this chip, capable of reaching 5 GHz across all cores (the Core i9- vanilla 9900K can only achieve this feat. in a heart).

So you're actually paying for an early 9900K chip, although in this case, there are still gaps in tolerances for overclocking and processors that can be boosted more than others.

Another point to note here is that if retailers have the Core i9-9900KS in stock, you don't expect these processors to be officially on sale anytime soon. As mentioned, Intel announced that the chips will be released in October, so we can review next week.
