The first PS Plus update is disappointing for Premium subscribers

Sony has unveiled a list of new games coming to PS Plus Extra and Premium as part of the first major content update for the revamped subscription services.

Stray leads the pack of new PS Plus titles. An upcoming third-person adventure game, you play as a cat exploring a cyber city populated by robots, lots of neon lights, and seedy mysteries. This is the first project of the BlueTwelve studio, which was put together by a couple of former Ubisoft developers. It's coming to PS Plus on launch day, July 19.

Alongside that is Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, the PS5 port of Final Fantasy VII Remake. In addition to being optimized to use the DuelSense wireless controller's haptic feedback, incorporating several quality of life updates, and offering improved visuals that take advantage of next-gen hardware, it also comes with Intermission DLC. The PS4 version of the game will also be available, but without the expansion.

Also coming is Marvel's Avengers, the superhero fighter from Crystal Dynamics, which was released to pretty mediocre reviews. It may not be one of the best cooperative games out there, but it will give you a few hours of fun and up to three friends.

A bunch of older titles will also be added, including five Assassin's Creed games and Saints Row IV. Find the full list of games below. All are due to enter service on July 19.

PS Plus subscribers will probably be happy to see Stray on the list. The upcoming feline adventure has caused a stir among cat lovers, as well as those who love the look of their peculiar and placid environment. Add to that Final Fantasy Intergrade, which came out just over a year ago, and PS5 owners have a lot to get excited about.

But the July lineup is disappointing for retro fans. There are no new PS1, PS2 or PS3 games coming to the service, leaving anyone who has signed up for PS Plus hoping to get back to older games.

It also means that PS Plus Premium members don't get much out of their high subscription fees. A Premium Membership gives you access to the PS Plus library of retro games, but with only two PSP titles added to the catalog this month – no heroes allowed! and LocoRoco Midnight Carnival – the $3 / £2.50 / AU$3 extra monthly cost doesn't seem worth it.

A short month won't deter most Premium subscribers, who are still exploring the massive library of classic games that PS Plus launched with. But Sony will need to make sure that the value of future monthly drops matches the inflated price of Premium. Otherwise, members will be tempted to upgrade to the cheaper Extra tier to save money.
