The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney Plus: release date, trailer, distribution and more
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier on Disney Plus is one of the Marvel TV shows we are most passionate about. This marks the first time we've seen the MCU properly venture onto the small screen (sorry, Marvel shows Netflix), building on the canon that accepts Marvel movies. But while we'll have to wait a bit longer to see it (production on Marvel's Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been halted due to coronavirus), it doesn't seem like there's much work left to do. In the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) team up again to face new threats and return threats. Steve Rogers passed the shield to Sam at the end of Endgame. However, he's still known as the Falcon: "I'm not Captain America. Just because he told me to hold his shield, he didn't say 'you're Captain America now,'" Mackie told IGN. "The question is, what did he do with it afterward?" Marvel CCO Kevin Feige told CCXP in 2019. Below, you'll find everything you need to know about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, with details on the cast, release date, footage we've seen so far, and more.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Release Date: August 2020

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier had a confirmed August release date, with a specific day yet to be announced. That being said, it is likely to be affected by COVID-19: production on the show has been halted due to the spread of the virus, and it is unknown when it may resume. That said, Disney and others sent an action plan to the governors of New York and California in June 2020 regarding physical distancing, protective gear, and regular testing to get production back on track. While most of the filming for Falcon will take place in Atlanta, the proposed week-long filming in Prague has been halted because the Czech government has imposed travel restrictions. It's hard to predict how long the planned release date will last as we don't know when work will resume, but the severity of the epidemic in Europe means we'll have to be very patient. With that said, on The Tonight Show in June 2020, Mackie gave us a positive production update and assured everyone that there was no chance of cancellation. While they are still "hopefully soon" the team "has very little to do." Just days after the news broke, House of the Mouse announced that all upcoming Disney Plus Marvel shows would be delayed by the pandemic. When the show finally arrives, there will be six episodes in total. Expect them to roll out every week on Friday, like all existing Disney Plus Originals.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier trailer: does it exist?

Kind of. During the Super Bowl, Disney Plus released a 30-second sneak peek of the first three Marvel shows on Disney Plus. You get more from Falcon and Winter Soldier than you do from Loki and WandaVision, including a shifting shot of Bucky holding a gun at Helmut Zemo, an extremely brief shot of Falcon flying around in his new suit, and the two characters. greeting each other in what looks like some kind of faraway ranch. You can also see John Walker (Wyatt Russell), aka Super-Patriot and USAgent, in the comics running on a football field. We'll explain in more detail below, but it seems like a fight is underway over who will be the next Captain America. It's enough tease to get you excited about the show.

The story of the falcon and the winter soldier: what we know so far

(Image credit: Disney/Marvel) The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, as the name suggests, brings Sam and Bucky together again for a story that takes place after Avengers: Endgame. There's no official synopsis for the series, but after Disney dropped the above teaser, Marvel called it a "global adventure that tests your skills and your patience." It will feature the return of the villain Helmut Zemo, last seen in Captain America: Civil War, and this time wearing his comic book mask. You only know that Bucky will want revenge after the events of this movie. In the Civil War, Zemo controlled Bucky's mind with a series of trigger words, causing a sequence of events that nearly led to the winter soldier's death at the hands of Tony Stark. We know that Sam still won't be Captain America in this series, even though we did see him train with the shield in the trailer. In fact, in the Disney Plus special Expanding the Universe, we actually get a brief preview of his new costume, which is somewhat in keeping with the classic look from the Falcon comics.

(Image credit: Disney/Marvel Studios) Although the plot of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is being kept under wraps for now, comic book writer Marc Bernadin speculated that there was some tension about Sam Wilson taking the job again as Captain America, and that would be the basis for the upcoming show. "The government doesn't want Sam Wilson to be Captain America," he suggests. It makes a lot of sense and fits with another key part of the show's cast. In November 2019, Wyatt Russell was added as the aforementioned John Walker, a character that should be all too familiar to comic book fans. Formerly known as the Super Patriot, the former soldier will appear on the television series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier in a Captain America costume. In fact, we've even seen what concept art looks like.

Could there be a battle here over who will get the title of Captain America? We may not be sure yet, but it would be a good direction for this show. Either way, expect plenty of character-rich moments in between the action. "We don't want it to be all the time," says executive producer and showrunner Malcolm Spellman in the documentary Expanding the Universe. "We have to go home with these characters, we have to spend time figuring out who they are. And because we have great actors, putting them in situations where they can really show what they're doing." "We get to create the same high-end thrilling action sequences, but in between these sets, we get to go deeper into character beats," said Zoie Nagelhout, supervising producer for the series. "So it's the best of both worlds." But when the action starts, expect it to be almost as impressive as an MCU movie. Speaking to Variety, Mackie said: "We shot exactly like a movie." The Falcon went on to say, "It looks exactly like we're shooting the cut movie of the series. So instead of a two-hour movie, a six- or eight-hour movie." Whichever direction the Marvel spinoff goes, don't expect it to be exactly like the MCU movies. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Mackie said, "They're going to feel completely different about themselves, because they're shot in a completely different way than the movies." Mackie explained that "I think people will be surprised at the depth and evolution of the characters by having six to eight hours for them, instead of just two."

The cast of Falcon and Winter Soldier: who's returning

Zemo is getting ready #SDCC @comic_con @marvel @marvelstudios Daniel Brühl A photo posted by @thedanielbruhl on Jul 23, 2019 at 10:57am PDT It's no secret that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will see Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan take on their roles in the hit Marvel movies. But it looks like we're in for a treat as several other familiar Marvel faces return for the upcoming TV series. Emily VanCamp reappears as Agent 13, aka Sharon Carter, a former SHIELD Agent and Peggy Carter's niece. The last time we saw her was during the events of Captain America: Civil War when she shared a kiss with hers now uncle Steve Rogers...but the less said the better. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier must fill in the gaps since the civil war, explaining what Agent 13 has done since escaping from it. As explained, Daniel Brühl will return under the name of Helmut Zemo, this time wearing his comic book mask. And as also discussed, Wyatt Russell is part of the cast as John Walker, a militaristic successor to Captain America who is likely the number one candidate outside of the forces that want to raise the shield. Actors Adepero Oduye, Desmond Chiam, and Miki Ishikawa have been cast in roles that are currently unknown. In February 2020, Deadline announced that Carl Lumbly (Alias) had joined the cast in an unknown role. Kari Skogland (The Walking Dead and The Punisher) directs all episodes with Spellman and Derek Kolstad (John Wick) serving as primary writers for the series.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier to explore Captain America's legacy

(Image credit: Marvel Studios/Disney Plus) It looks like The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will be as much about Captain America's heritage as it is about the main characters in him. Presumably this series will either complete the acceptance of the role of Sam, or see the Avenger take it on. Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo previously explained why they chose Sam Wilson to take the helm of Captain America, rather than Cape pal Bucky Barnes. "Since they met, there seemed to be a very common connection between the two characters," Anthony told Yahoo! Entertainment." His military background, his humility, his commitment to serve. He seemed like he would be the person Cap would trust." "Us," Joe added. "But...we try to make sense and sit in the room and discuss what makes the most sense from an arc and a logical standpoint, and Sam makes the most sense." "If nothing else, this show should be fantastic. A THR story has reported that the episode budget for the upcoming Marvel shows is €25 million.
