The Boys season 4 supercharges its cast with The Walking Dead star

Jeffrey Dean Morgan has joined the cast of season 4 of The Boys.

Revealed on Twitter, Morgan has officially signed on for an undisclosed but recurring guest role for the next episode of the hit Prime Video show. Morgan's casting comes just days after The Boys executive producer Eric Kripke confirmed that principal photography had begun on season 4. On his personal Twitter account, Kripke revealed that the next season of the rated show R Prime Video was in full swing, posting a Season 4 Episode 1 title image as proof of confirmation:

Interestingly, Morgan's casting continues a recent trend that saw Kripke team up with actors he worked with on another hit TV show, also known as Supernatural. The Boys season 3 – check out our spoiler-free review if you missed it – saw Supernatural star Jensen Ackles tackle the role of Soldier Boy in the superhero parody series. Morgan, who played Ackles' father in 13 episodes of Supernatural, is the latest actor from a dark fantasy TV series to team up with Kripke on The Boys.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely we'll see Morgan and Ackles reunite on screen in The Boys' fourth season. The Boys season 3 finale – read our final explanation if you need more context – saw Ackles' Soldier Boy go back into cryostasis after the season's climactic showdown between The Boys and Supes. Unless Soldier Boy is unfrozen in Season 4, we won't see Morgan and Ackles fighting alongside (or against) each other.

Casting Morgan on The Boys is also a two-year journey. In January 2020, Morgan and Kripke discussed on Twitter (opens in a new tab) the possibility of returning to The Boys Season 3. Obviously, that dream didn't come true, but now it's one that came true for the duo.

Regardless, Morgan feels like an ideal candidate for The Boys, with the former Grey's Anatomy and The Good Wife star making a name for himself playing morally gray characters.

Morgan played the complex and failed superhero known as The Comedian in the 2009 superhero film Watchmen, while his gruesome role as The Walking Dead's iconic villain Negan made him a well-known and award-winning actor. Now seen as an anti-hero in AMC's live-action adaptation of The Walking Dead, Morgan's Negan will co-star in the spin-off show The Walking Dead: Dead City alongside Laurie Cohan's Maggie in 2023. Whether Morgan plays a new Supe or an evil politician in The Boys, you know he's going to deliver a riveting, wicked performance that viewers will love.

Morgan's addition to the cast of The Boys season 4 is the show's third new addition in recent weeks. Valorie Curry (The Tick, Detroit: Become Human) and Susan Heyward (Orange is the New Black) joined Supe's ranks as Firecracker and Sister Sage respectively. Meanwhile, Cameron Crovetti, who guest starred as Homelander's son Ryan in seasons 2 and 3, has become a series regular.
