The big iPhone 14 leak reveals a lot of things we hoped didn't happen

If you don't like spoilers, look the other way now: a lot of news about the upcoming iPhone 14 lineup has happened.

9to5Mac reports that their sources (who seem pretty legit, given that they predicted Mac Studio to a high degree of accuracy) inside Apple have confirmed a number of things about the upcoming phones, such as the iPhone 14 mini not appearing in this Apple launch. iPhone. event of the year.

Sources say we'll see a 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch "base" iPhone model instead (so that would be the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, then) and the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are also expected to debut.

However, if you recall last week, Apple reportedly ditched the notch to show pads and punch-holes on the iPhone 14 Pro models, which would require them to be slightly longer to accommodate the additional sensors. .

Unfortunately (for those desperate for parity in the iPhone 14 series), sources at 9to5Mac have "confirmed" analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's claim that there will, in fact, be a chipset split: iPhone 14 and 14 Mac will get the A15 Bionic chip from last year, where the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max get the acclaimed A16 chipset.

There's also the return of the rumor that Apple will integrate satellite communications into its iPhone 14 lineup, not to let you watch Netflix using space signals, but to offer emergency messages and connections when you don't have cellular service.

It's unlikely to be a cheap option if it's available as a consumer service (although it's probably free in emergencies, like calling emergency services over any network), but it would be interesting to see how Apple markets this.

Opinion: A sad day for the iPhone

While no controversial changes are found in the 9to5Mac leak, the painted image isn't particularly exciting from a consumer perspective either.

The iPhone 14 mini could have been the culmination of two years of trying to get the smallest form factor right, so it's hard to hear another nail in that coffin (although I'm a big fan of the iPhone 14 Max notion - it's just makes sense).

I'm much less excited about the iPhone 14 Pro range with a pill-and-bump design; as I said recently, it's going to look a bit tawdry unless Apple can weave some symmetrical magic into its use. However, the claim that the iPhone 14 Pro range will be slightly larger as a result is intriguing: how much larger exactly? Will it be noticed?

And while dividing the iPhone 14 lineup by processor makes a lot of sense — the power of the iPhone is fine as is, and many users won't notice adding more grunt to that — it's still going to annoy people who are used to it. to have the latest and greatest silicon in your phone.

It's a claim iPhone SE 2022 buyers will be able to make from March 18, and for a phone that costs just $429 / £419 / AU$719, that's great - it looks like that won't be the case come September.
