TCL has developed a side-scrolling OLED TV - watch it in action here

TV maker and electronics heavyweights TCL have developed a number of rollable OLED display designs, and now we have video tests of TVs in the wild. This year's DTC 2020 conference saw TCL take the stage to show off two prototypes of the technology, one rolling out vertically (as with the LG Rollable OLED) and the other rolling out horizontally. You can check them out in the video below, courtesy of OLED-info: The side-rollable OLED is particularly interesting, given that the only commercially available rollable OLED to date, the LG Signature Series OLED R TV, rolls out vertically. It seems, if nothing else, that these flexible display technologies are improving in reliability and that more and more manufacturers are trying to display rollable technology publicly. There's no official name or release confirmation, and you shouldn't expect to see anything in the near future. LG introduced its own rollable OLED at the CES show in early 2019, and it wasn't until late 2020 that it was finally released, and so far only in South Korea. So if you're in the market for a new OLED TV, you're better off checking out our Black Friday TV deals page to see what sets are on sale, rather than waiting to see when TCL or LG bring this technology elsewhere.

How we ride

What's the point of roll-up TVs? OLED panels are much better at twisting, bending, and folding than LCD screens, and their self-emitting pixels mean they can maintain a slim form factor (and don't need a backlight behind them that would also need to bend). There's a huge benefit to saving space, as TVs can hide their screens when not in use, something only projectors have really been able to do so far. There could be a bright future for more flexible display technologies, as the limited availability and high prices of what we've seen so far show innovation in its youth.
