The next Star Wars movie to be directed and co-written by Taika Waititi now has the gist of a story he's "really excited about." The director (and writer/actor) was excited about the project in an interview with Wired, joking, “It's still on the 'EXT. SPACE 'stage', which means that the script is currently being written, but not finished. Waititi writes the screenplay with 1917 screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns. However, the main plot has already been made concrete by the noise of things, as Waititi explains: “But we have a story. I am very excited because I feel very good. To say we're intrigued by how this one will play out is an understatement. Waititi has a diverse catalog of past work, and isn't afraid to push existing properties into quirky, quirky territory: he's just finished filming Thor: Love and Thunder, and has already directed the highly entertaining Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do. in the movie Shadows (later made into a TV series, of course). Wired asked him if his "irreverent tone" would match the sincerity of the Star Wars universe, to which Waititi replied: "I tend to take that little alley of sincerity in my eyes. Movies. I like to trick the viewer into thinking 'haha. , that's it' and then say 'Shit, you made me feel something!'" Waititi already has a Star Wars connection, as you may know: he was hired to direct the final episode of the first season of The Mandalorian, and he also provided the Voice of the infamous bounty hunter droid IG-11.
