System Shock 2 will soon receive an 'enhanced edition' with better multiplayer performance

System Shock 2 is being revised with an improved edition from Nightdive Studios, which many PC gamers will no doubt be very happy, or at least intrigued, to hear.

The revamped version of this extremely terrifying sci-fi shooter, featuring one of the most terrifying antagonists in the history of computer games: SHODAN, a futureless artificial intelligence, appears to be in development and "to come".

Nightdive is currently working on a full new version of the first System Shock, destined for a 2020 release (on Steam at least), and the studio has already produced an improved edition of this original release.

This new version of System Shock 2 is apparently similar to the last one, although we still don't know exactly what Nightdive plans to change, except for one item.

Multiplayer review

Fans on Twitter have already pointed out that there are already many mods in the community that drastically improve the gameplay and visuals of System Shock 2. When asked what would be different with the Nightdive version, the CEO replied as follows :

Stable / active multiplayer mode to start! August 12, 2019

It's an interesting nugget of information, and there are certainly some folks hoping for co-op mode to be solved, so it may be one of the elements of Nightdive's projects. Others see multiplayer as a less important consideration, and some even claim that System Shock 2 is a game best played alone, at least during its first game because the loneliness adds to the terrifying atmosphere.

In any case, this is the only indication of what is planned so far, although other details will be revealed soon, the developer promises. Many people clamor for details on platforms that might be covered outside of Windows (although Linux will support an enhanced edition, for example), but we'll just have to wait and see.

System Shock 2 was first released in 1999 and Nightdive's announcement coincides with the game's 20th anniversary.
