Sudden WordPress price change sparks confusion and outrage

WordPress.com introduced major pricing changes without notice, replacing all of their paid plans with a single "Pro" plan.

The Automattic-owned website builder has also significantly reduced storage on its free plan, from 3GB to 500MB.

In a WordPress thread (opens in a new tab), some users on the platform expressed their frustration with the new Pro plan, which costs €180 per year with no option to split costs monthly, a feature previously available with WordPress. old plans.

In response to complaints on the WordPress forum, a company spokesperson said the goal of these pricing changes was to make the benefits of WordPress.com available to more people, describing previous plans as "too complicated." and "confused".

"Currently this does not affect free sites prior to new plan upgrades. We have reduced the price of our old business plan from €25/month to just €15/month (paid annually)," they added.

However, despite WordPress stating that the storage space changes would only affect new websites created on or after March 31, some WordPress users have complained that their sites' media storage space old has been reduced to 500 MB.

The previous Business plan mentioned by the spokesperson included up to 200 GB of storage, while the new Pro plan limits storage space to 50 GB.

After a weekend of users complaining about the changes, WordPress created a thread (opens in a new tab) to gather feedback and clarify the new pricing changes. In the FAQ, he acknowledged that the gap between a free plan and a $15-per-month plan was significant, so the company is working on "more flexible a la carte options."

TechRadar Pro has contacted WordPress.com to comment on the changes and the rationale for removing the monthly payment option for services, but the company has yet to respond.
