The successor to Huawei's Mate X folding phone may look a lot like the Samsung Galaxy Fold

The Huawei Mate X is quite different from foldable phones in that it is the only one that folds with the main screen on the outside, as most of them get closer to their main screens. Well, it looks like the phone's successor may forego this design. It comes from Ross Young, a shy analyst who frequently comments on phone screens and tweets about what he calls the "Mate X2." According to Young, the phone will have a foldable screen with parts from Samsung and BOE. This would make the Huawei Mate X2 look quite similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which had a folding screen; in fact, Young himself is comparing it to the recently announced Galaxy Z Fold 2. If this design prediction is correct, it would give the foldable phone a more conventional design compared to its predecessor, but also possibly more durable: an outer screen can be prone to scratches and scuffs. However, we'll have to wait until we learn more about this phone to be sure.

The Mate X2 is foldable like the Z Fold 2 and will come from Samsung and BOE. Not UTG, CPI instead. But maybe you already knew all this... :) Aug 7, 2020

Different screen material

Young predicts that Huawei will use a different display technology than Samsung for the Mate X2, which could make a difference for some users. Recent Samsung foldable products use ``UTG,'' or ultra-thin glass, which is exactly what the name suggests: a layer of glass so thin it can bend. The UTG phones we tested felt fairly durable, but not as durable as regular smartphones with thicker glass fronts and backs. According to Young, the Huawei Mate X2 will not use UTG and will instead opt for 'CPI' or colorless polyimide, a heat-resistant polymer used in microelectronics, but not so much for phone screens, although the Samsung Galaxy Original Fold did. have such a screen. Maybe Huawei tried CPI and found it better than UTG, or maybe it's cheaper or easier to come by. We haven't heard much about the Huawei Mate X2, so we don't know when to expect it; if it is in the future, there may be many other changes and updates.
