Star Wars Might Reform Gina Carano's Cara Dune, Says New Report

Last week, it was confirmed that The Mandalorian star Gina Carano has been removed from the Star Wars franchise by Lucasfilm, following an offensive post posted on the actress's Instagram account. Now, however, Lucasfilm is expected to recast the character of Cara Dune in the future, rather than remove her from the Star Wars universe entirely. That's according to The Hollywood Reporter, which cites insiders who "hope" the character will be recast "on the road" for story and merchandise purposes. This week, Hasbro confirmed that it canceled plans to relaunch a Cara Dune toy in its black series of cute Star Wars action figures, causing bids for existing action figures to skyrocket on eBay. The report again highlights something we previously learned about Carano: that she was in the process of being set to direct a Star Wars spinoff TV show on Disney Plus before Lucasfilm severed ties with her. This was expected to be the New Republic Ranger show. Could we see a different actress reprise the role when this series is made? The report also notes that Cara Dune was not scheduled to appear in the upcoming live-action show on Disney Plus in the Star Wars Universe: The Boba Fett Book for December.

It's time to keep going forward?

Star Wars has redrawn characters before, but usually with the goal of portraying them when they were younger, as we've seen with Solo, for example, though Lucasfilm has also experimented with CGI-aged actors from the original trilogy. It's a very different case, obviously. But we don't think it would be a big deal if Cara Dune was recast; in a show packed with some incredible actors, Carano was not the highlight. It was going perfectly well, but after a few episodes with a new actor, we imagined the world would change pretty quickly.
