Squid Game Season 2 Is "Absolutely" Happening, Says Netflix, But When?

Squid Game Season 2 Is "Absolutely" Happening, Says Netflix, But When?

In a move that will surprise absolutely no one, Netflix has confirmed that Squid Game season 2 is "absolutely" happening.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed the news during a recent earnings interview, and was quoted by Variety as saying, "Absolutely. The 'Squid Game' universe is just getting started."

We're still missing details, of course, but it's nice to know that Squid Game season 2 is on the way from Netflix. Previously, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said "there will indeed be a second season" but it was unclear how far the talks with Netflix went, at other times saying he would "talk to Netflix" about his vision. of a successive season.

However, the official endorsement from the CEO of Netflix suggests that things are starting to move forward. The company would be reckless not to, given the huge success of the South Korean drama, in which desperate and strapped-for participants compete in a series of deadly playground games to win a huge cash prize.

Considering it's the best Netflix TV series of all time, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before Netflix officially renewed it for a follow-up season. Not only that, but Sarandos' use of the word "universe" suggests that possible spin-offs could also be on the way. Oh, Il-nam's origin story, anyone?

So when could Squid Game Season 2 grace our screens?

Although it took Hwang Dong-hyuk many years to get his concept off the ground, the sequel will no doubt be a bit quicker to pull off. That is, if his other projects could slow things down. Hwang previously revealed, "There's a movie I really want to do. I'm thinking about what to do first" (according to The Guardian), so it could definitely affect the production schedule and push it further.

Considering the immense stress Hwang underwent during production of the first season, with the showrunner losing several teeth in the process, we don't expect him to return to the franchise any time soon. At this rate, we'd be surprised to see more episodes, or even hear of a release date, before 2023 - 2024 is the most likely release window at the moment.

Of course, Netflix has a reputation for stretching its favorite properties to the max. During the long wait for The Witcher season 2, for example, we got an animated movie set in the same universe.

So it's possible we could see a spin-off anime release from Squid Game, or something similar, in the meantime, from a separate creative team. We're already talking about a season 3 of Squid Game too, but let's start with season 2, eh?

The first nine episodes of Squid Game are streaming now on Netflix, and you can check out our final explanation of Squid Game for more on the show's ending.
