Spotify, Tinder, and TikTok are Down: Why Your iPhone Apps May Crash Today

iPhone and iPad users around the world are finding that Spotify, TikTok and other iOS apps are not working right now. Some users claim that other services like Tinder and Pinterest are down as well. This is believed to be a problem specific to the Facebook SDK used by many of these applications. Facebook has acknowledged an issue with its iOS SDK and has confirmed that it is investigating the issue. Facebook hasn't confirmed that it's working on a fix, but we can assume that the company is trying to fix the issue. According to Down Detector, a service that monitors online services, the issues started with Spotify at 11:32am BST and have continued ever since. A full list of other affected apps is currently unclear, but there may be more. TechRadar can confirm that the iPhone and iPadOS app for Spotify is causing problems for many users around the world. We found that the Spotify app doesn't load and instead shows the Spotify logo before planting. In our tests, we found that the service still works well on a variety of Android devices, and desktop apps weren't affected either. This tweet below shows the exact issue we saw:

@Spotify app suddenly crashes when opening app version: 8.5.66 iOS: 13.5.1 Tried: -Reboot phone -Redownload skin suggestions? pic.twitter.com/zWbzng7NYO10 July 2020 Spotify has confirmed that it has seen the issue with its app, and the company says it is "investigating the issue." According to Business Insider, an anonymous developer has confirmed that you can remove certain features connected to the Facebook SDK to ensure that your apps continue to function normally. This is a great sign that the problems are due to the Facebook SDK.

What can you do now?

Facebook or other app developers will need to issue an official fix for the issues to be sorted correctly. You can also make sure that your phone is offline and you can use some services. For example, we turned off the internet on an iPad device and were able to access Spotify again and listen to our downloaded playlists. You will not be able to reconnect to the internet without the app crashing as it will try to ping the Facebook servers and this will cause a new problem. This makes apps like Tinder and TikTok relatively useless without internal access. TechRadar has asked Spotify to comment and we'll update this article when the apps start to get fixed.
