Sonos could launch a mini subwoofer very soon to power your home theater

It appears that Sonos is set to launch a new subwoofer, after a Reddit user discovered details about the so-called Sub Mini in the brand's S2 app.

The user posted that details of the subwoofer came to light when he hit the "Learn More" button while adding a second Sub (Gen 3), the brand's flagship subwoofer, to his Sonos system. They also uploaded a screenshot of the info screen.

As well as providing information on how to connect a second subwoofer to your home theater setup, the page also revealed that the Sonos Sub Mini does not support this process.

Currently, the company does not have any products by that name, suggesting that a launch is on the horizon, and possibly very soon, if details of the new subwoofer are already available in the Sonos S2 app.

In a statement provided to Engadget, a Sonos spokesperson said: "We're still working on ways to create an even better listening experience for customers, but we have nothing to share about our future product roadmap"; However, we'd be surprised if the Sonos Sub Mini doesn't launch in the next few months.

The page also reveals a bit about the Sub Mini's design, in a section called "How do I know if I have a Sub (Gen 3)?" On the surface, the new subwoofer is "a smaller cylindrical subwoofer" compared to the brand's existing line of relatively large square devices.

A cheaper Sonos subwoofer? Count on us

Subwoofers like the Sonos Sub are a great way to boost the low frequencies of your home theater setup, especially if you have a smaller soundbar like the Sonos Beam (Gen 2), which doesn't sound as loud as the taller models.

Even if your soundbar is powerful enough, a good subwoofer can add tension to movie soundtracks by enhancing the lower frequencies of rumble, as well as making bass-rich music more full-bodied.

However, subwoofers aren't always cheap, and this is especially true of the Sonos Sub, which costs € 749 / € 749 / AU € 1,099. If the new Sub Mini is a smaller version of the brand's existing subwoofers, it should be cheaper than that, in the same way that the Sonos Beam is cheaper than its bigger brother, the Sonos Arc.

Sonos pricing has been a point of contention in recent months. In September, the company raised the prices of its wireless speakers and sound bars, which was considered an unusual and surprising move.

The Sonos Black Friday deals have also been particularly disappointing this year. There were very few discounts, even as we toured Cyber Monday, possibly due to a global chip shortage that has hit the audiovisual industry hard, affecting both inventory and delivery times.

Either way, a cheaper version of a Sonos product is always welcome, and while Sonos has yet to confirm it, it looks like we will see a more compact and cheaper subwoofer in the coming months.
