MediaTek is best known for the chipset that powers mid-range and mid-budget phones. Until a while back, MediaTek SoC-powered smartphones were not considered to be in the same league as the Snapdragon SoC. However, with the release of the Dimensity series processors, things have changed dramatically for MediaTek. Now, not only is MediaTek credited for democratizing 5G smartphones through its newfound success with the Dimensity series, but it's also looking to take Qualcomm to the next level of smartphones. Dimenstiy series SoCs including Dimensity 800, Dimensity 820, Dimensity 1000+, Dimensity 600 and Dimensity 720 targeting various segments of the price range have impressed everyone. However, smartphones powered by these budget 5G SoCs have been limited to the Chinese market only, hence the global audience has been nothing more than dumb bystanders so far. The company has now confirmed that the first wave of smartphones powered by the Dimensity series will be out of China in the latter part of the year. In one of the annual earnings calls, company executives confirmed that "5G smartphone shipments to regions beyond mainland China will begin in the third quarter." As of now, many Chinese brands including Xiaomi's Oppo, iQOO, Honor and Redmi have introduced smartphones with these new MediaTek SoCs.
