Smart RSR technology will increase frame rate by up to 70% on AMD GPUs

AMD's Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) could be a big step towards smoother gaming, potentially allowing some PC games to run up to 70% faster, or so it's claimed.

AMD has just shared some more details about the frame rate boosting technology in a new YouTube video, after revealing RSR at CES 2022.

As you may remember, RSR works with FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) technology, and both provide a frame rate boost (remember, FSR is AMD's DLSS road), but they work very differently. The key to RSR is that it's built into the Radeon driver, so it can work in all games in theory (unlike FSR, which must be supported by the developer in your game).

The central nugget of the video is the impact that RSR can have, and as mentioned at best, that's a 1.7x increase in frame rate (when upscaling from 1440p to 4K).

RSR should arrive in the first quarter of 2022, so the end of March in theory, although we can expect it to arrive sooner.

Analysis: AMD covers all its bases of improvement of frame rate

Boasting a 70% increase in fps (frames per second) is very impressive for this all-encompassing technology that can theoretically be applied to any game, but remember, that's "up" and results will no doubt vary widely. depending on the game to game (and from PC to PC).

RSR really opens up the frame rate boost, given that FSR only supports just under 50 games at last count (although admittedly there are over 20 more in the pipeline in the near future, including the impending God of War). on PC). It's certainly great news to get this much broader level of support, though how well RSR will scale vs. FSR remains to be seen.

The other thing to note here is that this only applies to (compatible) AMD graphics cards, whereas FSR can also deliver results for Nvidia cards (which is a real bonus for those who can't access DLSS because have an older GeForce card, or even for games that don't support DLSS of course).
