Samsung teases a new Galaxy Watch that will take on Garmin

Ahead of his Galaxy Unpacked event on August 10, Samsung's executive vice president teased Galaxy watches for people with a "passion for the outdoors" who want to "work toward becoming the best version of themselves."

While it's unclear if these statements relate specifically to the rumored Galaxy Watch 5, they do suggest that Samsung is developing a smartwatch that's more of a rival to one of Garmin's best watches than the Apple Watch 7.

Following rumors that Apple itself is developing an Apple Watch 8 Rugged to launch alongside the upcoming Apple Watch 8, we wouldn't be surprised to see Samsung also diversify its portfolio of wearables to appeal to a wider range of customers.

A Galaxy Watch just for you

As the blog post (opens in a new tab) by Executive Vice President TaeJong Jay Yang (who also leads Samsung's health R&D team) explains, everyone has a different idea of what it means to be healthy. For some people it's simply about reaching a daily step goal and getting some movement in, while for others it's about knocking down last week's PB to reach new levels of physical performance.

Yang adds that Samsung's goal is to create technology that enables people to achieve their own personal goals, whatever they may be.

For people with more subtle goals, something like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is likely to provide more than enough to meet their needs. It features basic step counting and GPS tracking to record distance traveled, and the BioActive sensor can track your heart rate and sleep patterns to give you a solid view of key health factors.

However, collecting and presenting sensor data may even be too much for the average user, with features like body composition monitoring better suited to people with more ambitious health goals. However, the Galaxy Watch may not meet all the needs of a fitness fanatic, as those who like to get outdoors will want a fitness tracker that can better withstand shocks and last longer. of the battery.

As such, Samsung seems intent on releasing a more diverse range of watches.

We'll have to wait and see what Samsung announces, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it release multiple watches at once; with a cheaper device that has downscaling capabilities alongside a more robust, feature-rich, and more expensive alternative.
