Samsung Sero TV is TikTok Ready and Headed West

As if we haven't spent enough time watching videos on our phones, we now have a TV trying to pretend it's also a smartphone screen. This isn't the first time we've seen the Samsung Sero TV in portrait orientation, but CES 2020 has revealed that it's coming to Western markets as well. The Samsung Sero TV can run in a traditional landscape format, but it can rotate sideways to play vertical portrait-style videos without black bars on either side. It sits on a stand that prevents it from touching the ground during turns and can be paired with a phone to automatically orient itself correctly based on what the phone is transmitting. This stand also includes a 4.1-channel speaker system, with 60W output, stats that make it a cut larger than your average display in terms of audio power.

At just 43 inches, the QLED screen runs at 4K resolution, but it lacks the higher-end screen-imaging technology like higher-end Samsung displays. It is then a screen aimed at teenagers, which makes a lot of sense when we consider the amount of content filmed and consumed in a vertical orientation to better suit the habits of smartphone users. Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, for example, deal primarily with vertical video. But is it the shape of things to come? Vertical TV shows are ordered to suit the viewing habits of a younger audience: Australian show 'Content' is filmed entirely in a vertical orientation and rightly follows the exploits of a budding internet influencer. Chinese internet giant Tencent also produces similar programs. Pricing and availability have yet to be released, but the Sero will leave Korea and head to the United States and "various world markets" later this year.
